Why was East Germany so ‘Poor’?

if I were to give you $1 and I gave another person ten chances are the guy with ten bucks is gonna be able to do a lot more with what they’ve got than you can and I think it’s this parameter that we have to bear in mind whenever we look at 20th century socialism and socialism of any character for that matter because truthfully it’s never created it only ever emerges from the system before it filled with all of the baggage that it comes along with two years ago if you remember I made a video called the parable of the divided Island and a lot of folks in the comment section called on my video because they drew a lot of comparisons between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic the East West German split has been for the most part the calling card of gotcha moments from people who are critical of socialism all the time one needs not going to any more detail it’s basically taken as a given well obviously you’d live in the West I’m here today to tell you that that sentiment is to say the least why was East Germany and for that matter many other socialist countries so poor by comparison to the West now before we begin I would just like to say I am referring to the DDR here as socialists but I am actually quite critical as to whether or not it would constitute a socialist country not for the reasons you think however it’s because there was never any revolution in the GDR to begin with largely it was a factor of Soviet hegemony that enabled the growth of the separate economic systems so in many ways you might call it hegemonic Lee socialist but don’t get me called out on that not true socialism card okay let’s begin if you intend clicking off in a few I’d just like you to go away with this the whole way that this debate is framed is very very misleading because it implies that there was a simple 50/50 fair game split between the two sides in reality the situation was far more murky if we were to split England for example into two based on historical groundings of north and south then they would be competing on very different playing fields from the outset why because the South of Britain has far more wealth more technology and everybody would want to flock down into the south simply because of one thing London a world city even if we split by population again the South remains a whole lot richer countries design themselves around very specific geographical locations for this reason in my home county of Devon the area is quite rural we only have two relatively small cities and about a quarter of the country is moorland if Devon were to become autonomous we would suffer without any outside assistance for that matter if you were to split the moorland areas off from the rest of Devon the more regions would suffer ever more so this works in just about every single nation you look at some parts are richer than others that’s the reason why nations spend decades building up specialities based on that geography now we have to recognize this when we look at Germany the split was not in half like physically it was not in half it was moreso in two-thirds with the West Division keeping the bulk share of the entire country and what were the conditions in East Germany at that time well as it would so happen the eastern sections of Germany suffered the most devastation presiden leipzig Dessau Magdeburg Chemnitz Halle and of course Berlin were all destroyed after World War Two with their urban centers in tatters and the areas around also lost a lot more due to the Russian invasion afterwards in addition to this East Germany has always been historically poorer and less industrialized than the West if you look at the German population density in 1900 and I overlay it on to the east here it never had the same degree of hustle and bustle as the West despite making up a third of the space of modern Germany it had 17 million people on a 40-year average whereas the FRG averaged 58 million people with just twice the space unlike Britain whose population normally centres around London and then spreads out Germany cityscape is more sparse due to historic reasons the bulk of which as you can see from this map centers around the western pocket of düsseldorf cologne Dortmund and in what we might call the best violin complex of sorts or maybe to use a less pretentious name the norther line vest violin I try I try and from there it spreads downwards Berlin by comparison appears to be more like an outpost now this complex I mentioned in fairness it was heavily bombed during the war however along with Bremen and Hamburg these were where the bulk of the German industry had been centered around for decades it’s easy to see why and that’s because of this the Rhine River an incredibly wide and long stretching River that goes throughout West Germany it’s no coincidence that the vest falling complex is situated right next to it the East has historically been the breadbasket area of Deutschland not the manufacturing hub and there’s actually a lot more to this than simply the agricultural aspect like I said not all economic areas are created equal and during the 21 years the eastern half of Germany was mainly based around an export economy and so for this reason it was reliant upon outside an internal German support in order to strengthen its standard of living whilst the western parts were focused on heavy industry the East was focused on agriculture textiles light industry and Zeiss lenses surround this time there was a system of trades and traditions set up that indentured what the country was dependent upon and that will then lead us to ask who and what did the ddr have to trade with in this new age whilst the West had access to the large American funded free markets of Western Europe socialist States had comecon yeah now this was basically a smaller market for most of the socialist countries but more importantly it only had access to far more at the time developing and poorer nations Albania is a good example of this only had its Industrial Revolution during the 50s and the 60s in 1945 five percent of the population knew how to read and write that’s like devastatingly low less than Russia as I’m sure you’re all aware the effects of the economic model that the DDR utilized was attractive for most quote-unquote low-skilled jobs but not so much for higher professions now why is this well it’s simple if you have high skills it’s far more tempting to leave and accept the money that’s being offered in the glorious luxurious West and yes it is important to note that they didn’t just flee many folks were actually bought by the wealthier side prior to 1961 loans of upwards of a hundred thousand dollars were issued to any East German who defected and sometimes even reimbursement for the property that was left behind and a free apartment when they arrived this is the main cause as to what created the massive brain drain from east to west upwards of 10% of these population left during this period when the Yalta Conference happened and Germany was split into four areas the eastern Western powers had different ideas about what they wanted Germany to be the USSR went to Germany to be unified in part because this would allow the whole of Germany to pay reparations for the devastating losses that the Soviet Union incurred America on the other hand wanted Germany to become the hub of markets in Europe as the American finances who funded the war needed places to then spread their global dominance in the years after the reparations for D D I ended up paying by itself was upwards of a hundred billion marks now with the cold war brewing America wanted Germany to be a heavily militarized area to pose a threat and a difficulty to the Soviet Union something the Chicago boys would later call enlightened self-interest the USSR wanted Germany to remain a demilitarized to prevent reprisals even at one point offering the creation of a unified non-aligned Germany with free elections and international supervision where the Allies rejected this because of course their conflicts of interests aside note I just want to bring attention to we generally tend to think of the eastern nations as the red block the communist bloc the Soviet bloc and thereby just stating that they were effectively ruled by the Soviets and their leaders were all just puppets you can say that if you want but you can also make a similar case for West Germany France Italy and Greece being American puppets France was basically completely indebted to America thanks to the Marshall Plan I wasn’t just aid it basically allows the u.s. to have a free market in advertising throughout the entirety of Western Europe and let’s not also forget about the rigging of elections as America loves to do America rigged Italian elections in 1948 Japanese throughout the entirety of the 50s and the 60s the Philippines in 1953 just to name a few America had to this power and it had far more wealth to give during the war its economy was the only nation that fought in it that went up as a result and so during this time of rubble in Europe it granted free range of opportunities for the United States to use and take advantage of the USSR the other superpower had lost one-sixth of its population entire villages and towns across the country had been destroyed in Belarus alone if you’ve seen come and see you know that six hundred villages were burned with their inhabitants along with them and this was not even the beginning of its history for the past 30 years the Soviets had endured economic sabotage sabotage by landlords famines a civil war orphan crises upwards of seven million kids lost their folks during the Civil War this might also explain why Russian cartoons tend to have themes of orphaned them entire railways 85% of my statistics are correct were lost factories mines and all manner of infrastructure reduced to fractions of what they once were so that was the background America by comparison had achieved its industrialization by the 1860s Russia only managed to get there by the time of the Second World War and only just so it was not in the nature of lonely out any funds so readily if anything it needed them itself so all of these factors were instrumental in East Germany being on the worse a playing field than the West it had a poor industry to begin with there was a grandeur devastation a lack of markets and it had to pay reparation now that all contributes whether you like it or not to a much poorer Society and it’s not just socialism the overwhelming would you of socialist economies grow faster and improve the general quality of life when you take in relative economic conditions into account and as for you see from East Germany – it did grow faster in spite of all the hardship that was pressed against it upwards of six hundred percent versus the FRG s400 the other nagging question of course everybody wanders about is what of the wall now the usual narrative as we all know goes East Germany crappy people no like woodland everybody jump into vesper lynd well the brain drain as I mentioned before was definitely a part of it but again the way this is being told is pretty crap and of itself so it’s quite sobering then to read the East’s perspective on it firstly this is not how a nation naturally has its capital nobody would find it particularly fair if America’s capital was located in Mexico and the capital then was also shared with the Mexican state that’s just not how you do it so having a capital city split into within the opposing country is not good for the weaker side period this can be seen if you look at how the West changed their currency in 1948 which disrupted the flow of things by having two currency areas literally site-by-site intermingling with one another West Berlin was also being militarily dominated and even had access to nuclear arsenals and nuclear training programs it had been made very aware of the time the NATO supported FRG had the intent of eventually annexing the DDR now they all Caesar sent numerous instructions of diplomacy please stop this weapons program for the previous four years all of which were denied and it was call for sorting out the very unorthodox structure between the new nations geography you know rather than stoke the flames of tension by creating more and more atomic bombs so no the USSR actually spent more of its product on R&D then actually many other Western nations did but it had to use the majority of this on supporting its growing arms race so when people like history hub would like to make a little slander by saying oh the USSR didn’t about its citizens I’d just like to spend money on war and rockets and all that that’s because it had to not because it wanted to so yeah anyway additionally we can also talk about the espionage that was being done by the west over 90 espionage organizations have been set up within the city as well as radio broadcast and sabotaging networks designed to fragment the nation up a considerable amount there were reported bomb threats by Western agents on DDR infrastructure as well as numerous killings of border guards I think it’s clear from what we’ve seen here that there was a lot more context surrounding the situation than simply the standard this good awstats narrative behind wall that had just as much to do with war espionage and sabotage as it did to do with brain trim I think given the circumstances we understand why it is that the latter occurred the question of what place would you rather live in comes with a sort of ignorance and blissful pride if I were to ask Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland it suddenly becomes a lot more clear than mercury and awkwardness of such a question we ought apply this when it comes to any nation there’s truthfully they all do want to get back together at some point no nation wants to be split some of the information I got from this video came from Mary full Brooks the people state and she makes a very sobering remark in that since the fall of communism nearly everything written about socialist States was written in the derogatory of one party government sub dictatorship of food shortages and that no Western historian would ever seek to write the social history of Western society solely in terms of regime policies and popular resistance but when it comes to the GDR this is how the social history has been conceived you can’t ignore the fact that there really does come across a subtext within all of this but no matter how dire things were and at times they really were dire there is ultimately a large pathology at play whenever we talk about these places you ought to bear that in mind next time you make your analysis because it’s not really a view shared by the majority of people who live there yes the majority of these Germans who live during 1945 to 89 57 percent believed that the nation was better than it was bad I repeat 57% believed that the nation was better than it was bad it’s an interesting observation seeing as the usual line from the budding anti-socialist is just ask a person who lived under a socialist regime a tie it’s terrible but this is more than just simple nostalgia because the trend has been noticed throughout almost all of the socialist countries 60% of Russians 70% of Tajik YZ 63% of Romanians 72% of Hungarians 62% of Ukrainians of Bulgarians and nearly 50% of lifts and Slovaks all of these people have attested to some variant survivor thinking they were better off under socialism or worse under the current system now why might this be the reason is because of what happened after socialism got gutted in the East and it wasn’t very rosy in the first few years of unification 1/5 of working people in East Germany lost their jobs the necessity of profit-making resulted in an economy interested in bottom lines and those externalities were thrown out for the birds GDP across the entire red block fell 40 percent in just the first five years similar effects have been seen throughout the continent to this day there have been massive increases in suicide homicide theft and burglary rates since the fall in many nations the life expectancy has only just recovered to its Cold War days in working life cuts were made across the board to occupational safety and workplace rights including sick pay maternity leave and various other benefits the ensuing poverty led to a larger uptake in sex work with people having little choice available to them in Ukraine where it got hit the hardest productivity and standards of living have yet to recover from their pre 1990 levels but there was however one silver lining of sorts in Germany after the fall many are seized looking for employment left towards the Rhineland and brought with them the teachings and experiences they’d gained under the DDR which enabled Westies a more expansive view on the rights of workers ie you are allowed good childcare and you should demand it the downside however is that because of the diaspora and the economic despair use Germany was left in the space has been filled in recent times by right-wing groups including neo-nazis the problem we are always dealing with when we discussed the Cold War is the trap of economies ‘im ie viewing economic performance alone as the sum of all parts in East Germany plenty of low-level working people were allowed to go on cheap relatively modest holidays with their families only inside red countries and mostly within the GDR today former Aussies have virtually no travel restrictions and can technically go and live anywhere they want in the world however for the majority of poorer people today that simply isn’t an option the market actually prevents them from enjoying a level of satisfaction that they got in the old days but probably the most salient example the perils of this economistic mindset is a study that was done in 2006 many RC men have since declared that their relationships and dating life have improved under capitalism and immediately we’d argue yeah that’s a plus for capitalism in your face commies but if you find out their reasoning for this it’s not so glamorous the most common reason they stated was because it gave men a stronger role in economic life and he who controls the money controls the household these men lists the reasoning that under capitalism they have more economic dominance and so therefore women are easier something deep inside tells me that that’s not a particularly good reason to prefer your relationship it’s another reminder that when people say they prefer a system the reasoning for it is not always for the societal good a general message in the media directed that the poor of today is to escape the impoverished neighborhoods they live in and go to what makes you feel better meanwhile as more people leave the neighborhood deteriorates as a result nobody wants to say stay in your misery but if you do draw my comparison the opposite is not the solution to society’s troubles so when we ask why was a country poor it’s not simply a matter of money many of us today have large access to a whole range of consumer goods and we’re not much happier from it a common opinion that you’ll always hear from people of former red states is that they never fell more relaxed than they were in the old days the removal of existential threats and the knowledge that you were being looked after to whatever extent they could manage it’s definitely something there are enormous amount of us today would desire and benefit from hugely and that’s not to be taken lightly now I could go a little bit further and talk about other things in the GTR such as the medical internationalism the nature of the secret police the enormous gains made for women the agricultural cooperatives the differences and denitrification transportation but I’m not gonna be doing that in this video because this isn’t about singing the ddr’s praises because there were plenty of internal contradictions abundant I made this video specifically to respond to the off stated point that the DDR was poorer simply because socialism and as we can see the ddr’s primary reasons for this would do to geography and economic investment comparisons as an addendum to my last video I just wanted to talk briefly about the nature of defending regimes in the past I’m not saying that we should forget about the future and simply just argue about who was right back in the day but what I am saying is that eventually it matters so I’m not saying that we should only focus on these things we can do them simultaneously but at the end of the day it will come up it will matter and there will always be a need for people to stand there with that information available to teach people and that’s as I think the reason why we should look at these places it’s not good to look back in the old days like they were fantastic they weren’t but it’s a sobering for that for most people in these lands Society was built in a different way a way that better serve the general needs instead of just profit and it’s worth good observation instead of just throwing in the next line about bread lines

100 thoughts on “Why was East Germany so ‘Poor’?”

  1. Let's play, spot an ideologue, oh wait, there he is. This video has all the hallmarks of forming an opinion first and then seeking evidence to support it. Had East Germany been the only state that suffered this fate i may have even bought it, but the truth is every country that wherever Communism went it left a trail of devastation behind it. Being largely rural with a few industrial centers is not in any way an obstacle, many nations had to modernize quickly in the 20th century, had East Germany been left to it's own devices it would develop the industry it needed, and import things it lacked. Especially when it comes to hard working people like Germans lack of infrastructure would be but a temporary obstacle, and as soon as suffocating boot of socialism was removed East Germany modernized at breakneck pace, and today there is almost no difference between former East and West Germany, it was Socialism alone that ruined East Germany.

  2. Every country which was once communist is full of poverty. Look at Western countries with their capitalism and east Europe with communism (early)

  3. ngl I'd write a social history of Western society in terms of regime policies and popular resistance if I had the knowledge, and I'm sure many Western historians have

  4. I agree the 57 percent approval rate doesn't sound very socialist, they normally have around 90 to 110 percent rates.

  5. Damn brother. I think you might be mistaken on some points. Not to mention, if you tried leaving you would get a bullet in your neck

  6. The east was poorer also because the Russians took reparations in many forms, not only money. They dismantled whole factories, bakeries and other things like telephone lines and shipped all of it eastward. The estimated damage is much more than that of the bombings during the war. They also demanded agricultural produce.

  7. That was a thorough work of historical revisionism. Very impressive how you ignored economic models and examples of other states that are socialist like Cuba. Had you made that comparison your whole argument would have fallen apart.

  8. You sir sound like a communist apologist akin to someone saying “well pedophiles are people too” the sheer amount of evil committed by socialism is unprecedented, total erasure of culture and family bloodlines & happy traditions scattered to the wind, millions of children to grow up in gulags (political disciplinary action is taking your family members from you) hence the real reason for orphan cartoons, more deaths worldwide than all religious conflicts combined back to roman period maybe further.

American culture is disappearing as well to you socialist goons, If you want to know the real effects of communism today look no further:

  9. A few of your arguments are valid but the overall presentation is strangely warped. You often provide an incomplete set of circumstances and widely disputed conclusions to support your argumentation. I guess this is why historiography is such a fundamental part of History. Anyway, it is hard to defend Socialist States. They have all been monumental failures.

  10. When country MUST have too close relationship with russia, it's allways poor. Try stay away from that country and you OK, of course if russia, allways hungry for neighbours lands, let you stay away.

  11. Regarding the part where you mentioned the growth of neo-Nazism in the former GDR, you should also mention that the left is stronger there than anywhere else in Germany. Look at an electoral map for Die Linke, and you see that it's strongest in the GDR. Like perfectly. The electoral map looks like divided Germany. So, while there is a growth of reactionary elements in the GDR, socialist ideology and sentiment is still very strong there.

  12. Mate, SU and Russian doesn't want to increase the wealth of their citizen only because that is not they goal … Failed states by leadership which can survive only if other states will be the shit state. They don`t care about people . Reason they are just modernized version of medieval times absolute kings. If You like so left ideas go for Russia or Venecuala or Cuba. There are true "Freedom" which in normal world is called state slavery 😉

  13. If you fuck up in a socialist country, you always blame it on the evil capitalists abroad. And so does this video.

  14. This video is so full of bullshit. Guess what, we are paying "Solidaritätszuschlag" (a transfer tax to rebuild Eastern Germany) in Western Germany to this day.

  15. using a horrendously ugly bow-wow's book as a source for your poor video really defines your point of view. Glad I turned it off before it was finished.

  16. This sounds like a propaganda video. I never trusted politicians in east or west. I don't want them to run the economy.

  17. How do you account for Poland’s post-soviet economic boom? You can’t account for it unless you put the blame where it belongs: authoritarian socialism

  18. Oh poor Russia and poor Stalin getting pushed around and bullied by the west. He was cornered and had no alternatives.

  19. of course things were "better" economically under socialism in the eastern bloc as when it did finally collapse under its own weight. there were no entrepreneurs and financiers to lift the collapsed system out of its slump. it's like having a mine run out of ore and everybody is still showing up for work and there is no more…

  20. “East Germany was only 1/3 of Germany.” Actually no because he’s forgetting pre-War Germany proper included East Prussia, Silesia, Pomerania, and the Eastern half of Brandenburg. In theory they had roughly the same amount of land as West Germany but decided to give most of it to Poland and the USSR proper. Up until the re unification, The FRG thought most of these lands would be restored once Germany became united again.

  21. Strange thing then is that still so many people in the end wanted the system to be abolished and not maintained. There were some things in the DDR which people liked and after the system was gone they missed it. But there was also many things they didnt like. That someone is defending a system that locks it own people inside its borders is sad. Because why would any good system do such a thing? Socialism is mainly based on picking out certain things and leaving out other things, a logical reasoning is then built upon those things that has been selected which may seem true. But when all the complexity makes it self known, then socialism and its socialogical arguments doesnt seem so true any more.

  22. The GDR is Central Germany and not East Germany! The video is just very bad propaganda. Anyone who has dealt with Germany's post-war history knows that the US has never been a friend of Germany. The USA are the war dogs of the chosen ones.

  23. O my god. Did tou leace in the east of Europe? Dis is the most stupid thing you can say. The comunist party(USSR) put back all the countries from east with 40-50 years. It was a plague.

  24. Says that he is not being biased but goes on to talk like a leftist/islamist moron…Not interested in propaganda commie boy..Man i was watching all the unbiased history channels and this commie propaganda channel came up…DISLIKE

  25. OK I do not see comments for most history channels which are unbiased till the end of videos. This moron commie's rant made me stop, check comments and his channel.. PEOPLE WHO ARE HERE TO LEARN HISTORY AVOID THIS COMMIE PROPAGANDA CHANNEL… He has the galls to defend Venezuela.. Commie Rat should be packed off to Venezuela with all commies in free market countries…

  26. Any goverment that needs to control its inhabitants in order to stay in power will per definition need to spend huge Resources on surveillance, and systematic promotion of people based on loyalty instead of merits. This is the real driver for east german collapse. All the reasons brought up in this video plays in only as starting conditions for comparing west and east germany situation at the beginning of the peace. Political system is the true reason for creating and sustaining this incredible gap between east and west.

  27. So you're a communist sympathizer. Then let the Russkies fund your propaganda instead of asking for Patreon/Paypal support from The West. Oh? Better fed than Red? I thought so…

  28. There is a lot of hogwash in this.

    1) The Ruhrgebiet/Rheinland was not a powerhouse of the West in the late cold war. It had a tradition of coal mining and steel production which was not competitative in the Western world economy since the 1960s. It couldn't compete with cheaper sources in (South) America and was highly subsidized. In the late 1980s (and to this day) Gelsenkirchen or Duisburg are among the poorest places in Germany by any relevant measure (unemployment, education, etc.)

    2) Prussia was dominating Germany from at least 1870 to WWII. It had highly developed infrastructure, administration, military and industry. Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein, on the other hand, were underdeveloped, non-industrialized areas and part of the West. Leipzig, Halle, Jena and Dresden were very developed centers before WWII. Berlin and the surrounding cities were cultural centers of German elite for centuries (e.g. Goethe and Schiller in Weimar, J.S. Bach in Leipzig, Hegel in Jena and Berlin, Messestadt Leipzig). That is why Western allies bombed Dresden so much in WWII. They wanted to hurt Germany in its cultural core for demoralization purposes.

    3) You completely ignore the point of cultural freedom. Yes, sabotage and even political assassination was done by Western secret services but everyday Joe/Johannes could be a hippy or whatever he wanted. In the East there was no way to shape any expect of society without de-facto approval by the political authorities. That is why there are almost no individuals in Germany who defend the DDR strongly.

    4) The DDR was very apparently weak in production and quality. Just compare a 1980s VW Golf to a Trabi.

    5) Germany is not the only example of the realization of the experiment to divide a country into a socialist and capitalist part. Korea, Austria-Hungary, PR China/Taiwan all tell the same story of the cold war: capitalism leads to progress and wealth, socialism leads to dependence and stagnation.

    6) The Soviet Union was rich on natural resources that Western Germany had to import. West Germany's economy needed to be extra strong in production and innovation to import natural gas and oil from Siberia. The USSR lived a lot from just having precious stuff in their ground that all of Western Europe lacks.

  29. You disable the comments on your videos because your Marxist beliefs are so fun to dismantle. A normal person would take that as a sign to perhaps think about the the faults of the ideology upon which your channel is based. But you defend East Germany machine-gunning citizens trying to ESCAPE from East Germany, rather than simply emigrating like any citizen from a normal country. You’re a deliberately ignorant fool.

  30. A chart showing GDP per capita is an…interesting choice to demonstrate how much wealth a nation can toss about. I mean, it shows Finland as equal to western Europe and Spain as greater than the USSR.

  31. The title of this video is misleading.
They(E., W. Germany and also E.,W. Europe) both were poor in the beginning.
The question should be "Why the West Europe became so rich(economically successful)?"
Before the outbreak of Black Death in 1300s, both had similar social structure of super wealthy landlords vs. super poor peasants.
Western Europe labor class took advantage of labor shortage from the disease but in the Eastern Europe, it was the landlord class that took advantage of it and deepened the class divide. It turned to the Serfdom.
In this case of black death epidemic, it happened accidentally, but it can be simulated artificially.
The similar "accident" happened elsewhere in the world in different times as well.
Most people still don't get the message and say, "That's hard to believe."

  32. Lol, wrong. So wrong 😂. Nobody's debating which system is better and more successful. It says silly as the flat Earth argument.

  33. Well, with the information given in this video, I can understand BadMouse's point. However, it was noticeable that much of the information is incorrect. Here's some points (TL;DR at end):

Devastation – While East Germany did suffer horrible damage from the war, it by no means suffered the most. Excluding Berlin since it was split, all the East German cities listed in the video combined suffered less overall, and proportional damage than Hamburg alone. Cologne and Dusseldorf each suffered more overall and proportional damage than Dresden, the most damaged East German city. Leipzig was the only other East German city that had over 500,000 inhabitants, and it suffered the least.

Industry – With the map of 1900 Germany, there are three large areas with the highest density that are similar. While the northern part of the East didn't have the same "hustle and bustle", one of the three major areas is right down in Saxony.

Rivers – While the West had the Rhine, the East had the Elbe. Just as Westphalia was on the Rhine, Saxony was on the Elbe. It wasn't the Rhine that made the West richer

Economic Interests – It's true that the Soviets wanted Germany to pay for reparations as a whole, because the allies together did share that interest, even America. That 100 billion Marks figure wasn't what the East paid to the Soviets though, it was what the Allies agreed all German occupation zones combined would pay in total. It wasn't about America making Germany the hub of the European markets, if there was any country that America wanted as a hub, it was Britain, the home country of BadMouse. Both sides agreed on the reparations, what caused the split between them was the development of Germany. America and Britain wanted reparations but also wanted the economic development of Europe, which they saw would need Germany to help. The Soviet occupation zone didn't join what became West Germany because Stalin refused the idea of a redeveloped Germany, and forcibly cut off any connections between the two, which even lead to humanitarian crisis in the West. Eventually the West recovered, and in fact went through an economic boom despite the reparations, because of the liberal reforms Britain and America had made on the country, specifically the cut down on extremely high taxes of the poor and middle class along with the introduction of the Deutschmark that replaced the inflated Reichsmark.

Puppets – Saying that the influence of America on the West was similar to the Soviet Union on the East would be quite a stretch. America did have strong ties in France which they pulled, and Charles De Gaulle responded by having France outright leave NATO and deny American businesses, to which the US did not start a war over. However, in the Soviet Bloc, simple protests resulted in the USSR outright invading the countries and brutally suppressing them. Rigging a couple of elections in favor of themselves is not the same as establishing a one party state that obeys orders from the bigger country.

Military occupation – Yes, America did occupy Germany, and so did the Soviets through out the cold war. The Soviets weren't about peace with no military. Let's take a quick glance at Korea, it was split between the two powers however the US put little military investment in it. South Korea was no threat to the Soviets, yet they armed the North and outright invaded the weaker country immediately after its inception. The Soviets building their military might was a want, not a need. The Americans, if they wanted to compete with the Soviets, had to build their military too.

Context and geography are important things to consider when making a comparison, but in this case it isn't the main cause of the difference. In the end, It was Liberalism that built the West to be wealthy while it was Imperialism that lagged the East behind in development.

  34. Venezuela was the richest nation in Latin America and its now one of the poorest. They "started" (the XXth century) with way more income than Perú for example. Now Perú is far richer than them, so much so, that nearly 1 million Venezuelans have emigrated here in the past 2 years. Doesn't mean your point is completely invalid but its not wholesome. Guess which country chose to follow capitalism and which socialism.

  35. Socialism = mad uber-statists crapping on the locals via their gross uber-state power-to-rob hierarchy…. like globalist capitalism with its corporate hierarchies but worse because it concentrates much more power in the hands of much fewer controllers………… who are all mad because they are zealous socialists (dog-robbing control freaks on crack).. If you exclusively promote socialism, communism, fascism or corporatism/capitalism as the best way of life/society for all, or even the majority you're a dickhead.

  36. The Westpfahlenkomplex is called Ruhrpott.
Btw: FRG is that a thing? We, in Germany, call the USA USA and not VSA, so I always thought everyone would call the BRD by its German name. But probably that only works one way.

  37. good vid! also liked the Come and See plug, very interesting movie! As an american who has been disillusioned, knowing that American Exceptionalism is a myth, I liked the way you presented the West and East. Both had motives to keep their spheres of influence intact and BOTH used dubious methods to do so. Thank you

  38. Watching and writing. Lots of Bullshit going on.

    1. 10 dollars to 1 dollar. People are inherently out for themselves. I want more and will find a way to get it.

    2. Spliting Germany in 2. Rural East Germany was still much more industrialized than the rest of the Bloc, you know their primary trading partners; the comecon! But wait, the communist Russians stripped them of all their heavy industry. Also of note, the communist bloc said no to the marshall plan.

    3. Smart people leaving for financial incentives… Sounds smart.

    4. Puppets… France left NATO for a bit. Yes the US did some rigging. But how do you explain every red country not having rigged elections. Yet as soon as a real one comes along, they lose.

    5. Reparations demanded by their Comrades.

    6. I don't see Americans jumping the wall into Mexico, that is a trash talking point for capitals. Walls keep people in or out. People wanted out.

    7. Military spending, it had to because Moscow told them they had to.

    8. The Stasi was very heavily involved in espionage in the west. Tit for tat.

    9. People look fondly on communism because retraining/transitioning back to capitalism is painful. The Safety net goes away and productivity matters. Ie, the obsolete factories need to be replaced and/or invested in.

    10. Increased crime? Thank Angela for letting in the entire Middle East with values substantially different. Immigration has outpaced integration.

    11. Escaping impoverished neighborhood, your damn right! Stay in the hood, it's for the best. I will not, I have rights living in a republic.

    12. SOCIALISM has yet to work anywhere! Look at Venezuela!

  39. East Germany had to be different to West Germany because Prussia had to be completely and utterly destroyed, in name, tradition, and culture. Same reason the Germans had to give the Poles large chunks of the East as well. Prussia was considered to be largely responsible for WWI and WWII, and this militaristic region had to be… well, "delenda est Carthago" describes the sentiment (although not to the extent of killing everyone and salting the earth, thankfully). That's my understanding anyway

  40. There was a organisation in late East Germany called "Treuhandanstalt" (trust agency) that was designed to help the State owned companies to (re-)privatize.

One example I like to bring up is the "VEB Fahrzeug- und Jagdwaffenwerk 'Ernst Thälmann' Suhl" commonly know as "Simson." They manufatured Mopeds and light motorcycles that were simple, easy to repair, reliable and cheap. Teir main stars were the "Vogelserie" (bird series) a series of small motorcycles and a scooter named after birds and the infamous S50 and S51 motorcycles.
Their products had superb quality and could have done well if it weren't for the Treuhand. In a documentary I saw, one of the chief designers said, that the first and only goal of the Treuhand was to close the factory. They somehowe still pulled thruogh until 2003 when they finally closed.

I own a Simson S51 and it is the most amazing veicle I have ever driven. It's fun to drive, you can modify it with all sorts of original parts from other Simson bikes and they have a huge audience today and with them come tuning companies that specialise on DDR motorcycles. There a a lot of meetups some of which are huge and you will not find 2 bikes that are exaclty the same.
And if it breaks down, you can get a manual from the Internet, or you can order an original DDR manual and fix it by yourself.

I think the company would have done great after reunificaton. They had manufactured a motorcycle with 125ccm from 1998 to 2002. if you look at it, you'll think they would have made it between 2008 and 2012. But Treuhand wanted to close the company, just like a lot of others and Simson is no more.

  41. Totally absurd. Communism brought poverty all over the world, not only in East Germany. If West Germany had adopted communism it would have been just as poor. I was born in Cuba but I've lived in Europe for many years and I have visited all the Communist Eastern European countries and not one of them enjoyed prosperity. People had to make big lines to buy things like potatoes. The only exception was Hungary, where they allowed some free market, and a little bit less Yugoslavia. But the rest were economic failures.

  42. Western Europe : Is in ruins after WW2
Badmouse : The West was always richer
Fuck this shit , the West and East were both in ruins after WW2 , but the West being Capitalist and letting the free market work it's CRAZY MAGIC was able to GET AHEAD

  43. People who believe in Soviet Imperialism are Really Stupid.
Most Countries already Existed in Russian Empire. Other countries were independent but asked for military defense from invasion of Imperialist Countries like South Korea, USA.
Imperialism only exist under Capitalism because Government consist of bourgeoisie values and lobbying, taking over most political jobs and parties.
In USSR and China, Cuba, etc government was under dictatorship of proletarian ( aka working class highly involved in politics and economy) where most of politicians comes usually poor or middle class familes.
    Difference in Governments was:
Democracy by Big Businesses vs Dictatorship by Workers.

  44. 8:29 haha USSR want free election lol. never trust stalin he said it would be free elections in eastern europe

  45. I haven't watched the whole video, YET, but wasn't the East German economy almost on par with the UK (GDP per capita) in the 1970s. Granted the 1970s were tough times for Britain and sucked in general. I'm guessing that the wealth was more evenly distributed in the DDR, though.

  46. Was expecting an objective thorough explanation of the economic short comings of Socialist Eastern Germany. Instead got an angry rant from a socialist who thinks he knows better than everyone about everything.

  47. HEY COMRADES ! IS ANYBODY HERE AROUND WHO COULD CREATE SOME ENGLISH SUBTITLES FOR SOME OF MY VIDEOS/MOVIES ??? PLEEEAASEEE

I uploaded lots of rare german documentaries/movies about history of class struggles, socialism, communism and so on. Here are some examples:

Frontkämpferbund« or »Rotfrontkämpferbund« (you could call this the
    mother organisation of Antifa)

This only were EXAMPLES there is even more… and also there will be lots of stuff following in the next months because i am diving into many archives. 🙂

    * GDR = German Democratic Republic (so called »East Germany«)
    ———————————————–

Of course: I LOVE U, Badmouse! <3 Rotfront! from Germany

  48. as a German speaker, I would love to contribute to this channel by pronouncing things correctly. next time, simply send me a list of ze German terms that will appear in the video, and I will record myself saying them so you can dub them in during editing, jajajajaja

  49. Not saying I agree totally with this video. After all, with comparable resources and population, the United States was a far better place to live for quality of life than the USSR was. However, the western occupation zones being unified into West Germany was in complete violation of the post-WWII treaty with the Soviets. The Soviets agreed to the division of Germany along those lines as it was divided in four. And then out of nowhere, three fourths unify without Soviet consent, and then gloat about how much better their side is. Well of course, the capitalist side got 3/4 of the country. Again, not saying even if East Germany got an equal 50% of Germany they would have been equal in quality of life, but the comparison is kinda unfair.

  50. Also, you are bullshitting on the weapons. The West maintained relatively small military forces and had major peace movements. And yet the Soviets maintained a massive level of military expenditure, despite the clear fact that they couldn't really afford it.

  52. The soviet union made the area they controlled (DDR east Germany) pay a lot more repetitions and debts towards the Soviet Union. The west didn't have to pay as much debts and reparations to their allied occupiers. Eastern Germany cities were also some of the most effected cities from the war and from the bombings etc.

  53. "no nation wants to be split' is the foundation philosophy of Fascism, Italian and German Fascism both emerged form the Italian and German unification movements of the 19th Century. A Socialist should know better then to say something like that. Communism is actually far more viable under local City-States.

Also Stalin basically let East Germany be run for former Nazis, Stalin was a Fascist who infiltrated Bolshevism and went to war with Hitler because their interests conflicted not because of ideology.

  54. This guy is wrong big time. East Germans left for the west to get away from the communist bullshit….the ddr was so great that they shot people trying to leave. This guy wants to talk about bullshit??? Admit it Skippy you're a member of antifa!!!! Obviously since his best source is a communist herself. Btw…..go live in Cuba or North Korea and tell me how glorious those shitholes are!!!! I also can't help but notice how he left out how the Soviets crushed the June uprising in East Berlin…caused by the oppression and appalling living conditions imposed by the commies…..then there was Hungary 1956….. Czechoslovakia 1968….. Afghanistan 1979 and numerous proxy wars in Africa. Even Ceausecu of Romania frequently criticized Moscow because of these invasions the USSR took part again against fellow communist countries. Can't blame the west for that… sorry. Even East Germany at the last moment decided not to take part in the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. Class dismissed!!!

  55. North Korea had way more than South Korea in the beginning. And foreign Communist nations backing it. South Korea adopted the Capitalist system and flourished.

  56. Honestly, this is just a socialist wank… This is overly bias and probably made by a socialist…
edit: Damn worse… its made by a communist…

  57. there are some wrong conclusions and wrong assumptions: some of the "hightech" industries of 1945 whre located in the east especially in Berlin (Elektronics, chemical industry) and Saxony (Car manufacturers). Bavaria on the other hand was then a very poor and undeveloped region. it got money from the other parts of germany for a very long time. Same is true for publishing and banking and assurance companies. They all relocated from Berlin/Saxony to Bavaria, and Frankfurt after 1945. East germany was a very big failture because the socialist planing was in every matter the wrong direction.

  58. It's true that many people who lived under soviet rule believed their nation was better than it was bad, but you must also take into consideration that most of the citizens never knew of another way of life. Young citizens especially had little to no knowledge about the western world, and many of them never even thought about the idea that there is such a place. They were living around communist propaganda, and they were under a country's rule without a choice.

  59. East Germany was poor beacuse they lose the old german territority Silesia (lot of industry) and the harbour Stettin, Swinemünde
