DEVELOPING STORY.TOM:GOOD EVENING, I’M TOM MILLER. WHAT’S BEING DONE ABOUT HOMELESSNESS THROUGHOUT TEXAS AND HERE LOCALLY?AS THE TEXAS TRIBUNE FESTIVAL WRAPS UP TODAY….AUSTIN’S MAYOR IS AMONG THOSE TALKING ON A PANEL ABOUT HIS PLAN. KXAN’S WILL DEPREE EXPLAINS WHAT HE BELIEVES WILL ON BOTH ITS STREETS AND IN ITS POLITICS…. HOMELESS IS FRONT AND CENTER IN AUSTIN. MAYOR STEVE ADLER TALKED AT THE TEXAS TRIBUNE FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND ABOUT THE STRUGGLES COMBATING THE ISSUE– AND HOW THE CITY SHOULD DEAL WITH IT. SOT WE KNOW WHAT WORKS. WE JUST HAVE TO SCALE IT UP AND DO IT AS A COMMUNITY.ADLER SAYS THE CITY HAD SUCCESS HELPING HOMELESS VETERANS FIND HOMES IN THE PAST WITH THE VETERANS SERVICE OFFICE. ADLER HOPES THIS NEW PLAN WILL FIND SIMILAR SUCCESS SOT WE SHOULD DO THE SAME THING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SURROUNDING THE ARCH THAT WE DID WITH THE VETERANS IN OUR COMMUNITY WHICH IS A FOCUSED AND CONCENTRATED EFFORT ON THOSE INDIVIDUALS THE PANEL ALSO FEATURED OTHERS LEADERS FROM AROUND TEXAS WHO’VE HAD SUCCESS HELPING THE HOMELESS. THEY SHARED THEIR ADVICE WITH MAYOR ADLER. SOT YOU KNOW IT STARTS WITH SUPPORTING EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION IT STARTS WITH SUPPORTING FAMILIES, MENTAL HEALTH, SUBSTANCE USE. GOVERNOR ABBOTT HAS CRITICIZED AUSTIN’S HOMELESS MODEL. HE SUGGESTED THAT ADLER TAKE A LOOK AT SAN ANTONIO. THAT CITY’S MAYOR ALSO SAT ON THE PANEL. SOT WE ARE ALL PART OF THE SAME NEXUS OF HOMELESSNESS ISSUES IN TEXAS. THIS IS NOT A CITY ISOLATED ISSUE. THE CHALLENGES WE FACE ARE REGIONAL.ADLER SAYS THE GOAL IS REACHABLE – BUT THE COMMUNITY HAS TO SUPPORT IT FIRST.SOT I WOULD EXPECT THAT IN ONE TO FIVE YEARS WE DON’T HAVE PEOPLE CAMPING AND LAYING ANYWHERE IN OUR CITY BECAUSE NO ONE WANTS THAT FOR ANYONE WILL DUPREESPEAKER OF THE HOUSE NANCY PELOSI WILL ALSO BE HERE TONIGHT TO CLOSE OUT THE FESTIVAL. WE’LL TELL YOU ABOUT WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY AFTER SUCH AN HISTORIC WEEK IN POLITICS COMING UP TONIGHT AT 9 AND 10.
