There is a great deal more to be said. It's been well stated by Sir Herbert Read. Speaking from experience, I believe that very few people understand the great utility of Art Education. Piaget and Lowenfeld helped put good information forward, but the most important thing seems to be in that it creates opportunities for a child to experience the process of transformation of materials and ideas, evolved with greater maturity as they get older. How else can we meet the objectives of Education in NSW: "To guide the student, within the context of society, towards Perceptive Understanding, Moral Autonomy, and Responsible Self Direction? " For most children, the value of image making is important, but so too is the process of seeing how transformation of materials, with finesse, leads to a perspective on their own evolution in ever changing times.
Awesome video!Please pardon the following ramble:Somewhere down the line, I have seen kids being stripped of taking creative risks. I don't know if this happens between grades 3-5 or what, but I know as a kid, we loved free time in class to explore each others imaginations as we collaborated by inventing characters and stories and scenarios to go with them. We naturally involved sequencing and developing drawings as it all evolved. In Jr high I was exposed to still life, figure drawing, ceramics, sculpture, perspective etc…
I don't witness much of what we did in elementary now. The experimentation, taking risks has almost been extinguished. It's almost to the point of having to repeatedly tell students what to do. Otherwise, they will sit waiting, or distract others who are making an effort.Many say they are tired of being pushed in math, reading and science all day that they just shut down by the time creative thought time (art) comes around. Many hate being in band, (it's too hard or dumb they say) so they take art by default or drop the class during their 6-8th grade band experience due to arguments/disagreements with the band directors. Some have been removed from athletics classes due to discipline problems and are placed in….art class. These kids have no break-recess time during the day.(They do have Phys.Ed.) I think they use my class as a recess with all that pent up energy. I know Finnland stresses the importance of unstructured playtime during the day. It's sure helped them.
In the meantime, I'm trying to push everyday life and events into their art skill building, then using their skills to experiment and develop an artwork. Different media, art styles and some core content are all blended in throughout the year btw. All the while I'm trying to get students to enter art contests and to participate in the end of year art show. Complaints abound that art is too hard. Sometimes its in front of administrator, who quickly responds to them something like "I had the same kind of assignments, I was no different than you and I did it."When they are given these assignments, some are pleased with the results, while it seems those that always complain and are vocal about it struggle and are not willing to take any creative risks. They prefer a coloring sheet to experimenting, developing, collaborating etc…
After monitoring progress and skill levels AT THE BEGINNING of the year, I specifically chose to give basic introductory lessons that can be done by kindergarten to 4th grade levels. I show them examples of the k-4 work after they have attempted the assignments sometimes and they are in awe and disbelief that kids that young are doing what they are struggling to do. These are lessons in paper sculpture (3-d, form, in-the-round), portrait drawing (proportions), still life(elements space, value, using a viewfinder to help with composition) just to name a few. All this makes me wonder…how did these middleschoolers lose their desire to create?Is it our school system that doesn't implement real art ed in elementary? By the time they get to me they think it's a frill class, some students say it's ok if they fail art, their parent says art doesn't matter. "Art is just play time" as one parent told their child as I was discussing their grade average with them.Many students think I'm doing a good job with them. They say the others are lazy and only want free time to do nothing or take the class because they don't want the other fine Arts credit class which is band.
I know Band has its skill building and expressive attributes, I was in band at their age, but hat's not the issue though, I just find it baffling that many students here hate band AND they don't want to be creative in the visual arts.

I have used more of the things I've learned in my art classes in real life situations than I have any of the mathmatics I've learned throughout the years. I come from one of those schools that cut funding for the arts. I had to take the most basic foundation and try haphazardly to figure out a lot on my own until college. My niece is a true natural talent and I encourage and provide her supplies, books and gallery trips. I don't want to see such talent and creativity go to waste.
School doesn't teach break-dancing or rap music. We have no shortage of masters in either. Art evolves with time. Preservation of art/culture/lineage should be done, and it would be more efficient if funding is directly used in that (in museums and elite art schools for serious students/scholars not partying drunkards). Rather than wasted by teaching it in school where 99% of kids will not pay attention or will forget anyways.
It's hard, at least for me, to quantify to others the real importance of art.
To quote Albert Einstein,
“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination.
Imagination is more important than knowledge.
Knowledge is limited.
Imagination encircles the world.”
The great minds of past and present were so not just because of their knowledge, but the added creative dimensions that they could built their grand theories, machines, and buildings with.
Formal education CANNOT teach a child creativity, however, it CAN foster it to help it grow. It can give the child the time, space, and materials to experiment – creating that spark and motivation that some children need to express their creativity. All the while, educating them in the elements of art: technical skill, history, theory, concept, etc…..etc…..
Children DO NOT need formal education to be creative. You have the preconceived notion that every child has access to and the financial means to art materials, as well as the space and time to use them at home. This is not the case. Sometimes the only chance a child has to express him or herself artistically IS school.
Yeah, I understood it. I just wasn't that impressed with the argument that children need formal education in art to be creative.
You obviously haven't understood a word!
A child cannot teach him/herself the fundamentals of Art , just as they cannot teach him/herself the fundamentals of math and science. this being said, Art cannot be left out of the education system due to the huge role it plays in the development of the child.
if you have to ask this question,, you need to watch the video again. There is more to art than messing around with it on your own time. It involves a lot of teaching on part of the teacher and learning on part of the student. It involves math, science, history, politics, technology, critical thinking, debate,, i could go on and on.
Good points, but why can't they just learn art on their own time and spend time in school learning math and science.
