The Aged Care Worker: Caitlin’s Story

♪ (Music Playing) ♪ My name is Caitlin Maher and my VET course qualification is Certificate III in Allied Health and my occupation is an aged care worker. ♪ (Music Playing) ♪ I was a finalist at the Australian Training Awards for the School Based Apprentice of the Year 2014. ♪ (Music Playing) ♪ Being a finalist was an honour. I was so excited to go – I got to go to Adelaide and meet the other winners from each state who won the same award. We had days just to get to know each other and learn about each other’s qualifications. And my whole family was excited. My manager from here at Willowmead, she came along to Adelaide with us. And the actual night itself was a great success and everyone had a great time. ♪ (Music Playing) ♪ When we were given the opportunity to sign up as the ambassadors it was good for us all to stay in contact with each other and keep promoting school based apprenticeships and our own personal apprenticeships. ♪ (Music Playing) ♪ I think the main thing to tell people about the school based apprenticeships is ‘there is nothing to lose’. When you’re in school, this school based apprenticeship gives you an opportunity to get a taste of what it’s like to be in the workforce, when you finish and you can then test to see what kind of careers you want to go into when you leave school. ♪ (Music Playing) ♪ I went into aged care not 100% sure if it was something I wanted to go into and it turned out that I loved working here, I’ve stayed on since I’ve finished and it was just good, I guess, to be recognized for the work I’ve done here. I work closely with the nurses here. We’ve formed good relationships and they talk to me about what sort of stuff I can go into through nursing and they’ve shown me what sort of stuff I can do here as a nurse. And it’s quite a challenging job but I’ve got the skills I know I’m going to take into nursing and it’s confirmed to me now that I definitely want to go on to university and finish nursing, which I’m doing now. ♪ (Music Playing) ♪ People think that you can’t do a school based apprenticeship when you’re going to go to uni the next year. It’s more for people who just want to stay in a trade. So I think it’s these three things. By doing the VET course, it’s given me the motivation to go on to an apprenticeship which has encouraged me to definitely go to uni. It’s confirmed that I want to be working in the health field and it’s helped me start off my year with a flying start and the hands on work I’ve been able to pick up quite quickly. ♪ (Music Playing) ♪
