Tax Site Interpretation GD

Hi. My name is Julia Cheng and I was a photojournalist for about 16 years before I moved here to Duluth in 2004. After about a year or two here in Duluth, I started thinking about making a change in
my career and I found a job here at Community Action
Duluth through the AmeriCorps program. So that means I first came to Community Action as an AmeriCorps volunteer. Well, it’s not really a volunteer. It’s an AmeriCorps Service member. I was stationed here at Community Action Duluth to prepare taxes and do financial literacy
education and after my two years of full-time service
ended, I was hired here to coordinate the tax site and I’ve been here ever since. So you may be asking what is a tax site? Well, we are a IRS sponsored program That prepares income taxes for low and middle income families for free. The program is powered by volunteers. We recruit 80 to 90 members of the community
every tax season. They come in early in January and start training In tax law and tax site procedures. They have to pass IRS certification tests
and tax preparation and then at the end of January, we have our Grand Opening Day. People are going to be lined up outside of
our door, waiting to come in to get their taxes done. So when you come to our tax site to get your taxes done, you can be assured that the volunteer who
is preparing your taxes is trained and certified in tax law and tax
ID procedure. And they are not the last line of defense. Every tax return that we do here at the tax
site is reviewed by a second volunteer And then overseen, supervised, by myself or my colleague who is a site coordinator. We take a third look at everything Before we electronically file to the IRS And Minnesota or Departments of Revenue or Minnesota or Wisconsin Departments of Revenue. So a family that comes to our tax site has to meet income eligibility guidelines. An individual or family can have income up
to $54,000 a year during this 2018 tax season which is the season when we prepare, current year meaning tax
season 2017. We always do the current year tax return during our regular tax season which runs from the end of January until tax
day. You know, usually April 15th. If you have a specialty issue such as a prior
year tax return, you know, or you’ve got a back tax issue or you’ve discovered that maybe there was
a mistake on a return that you filed a year before or maybe you didn’t claim all the credits
or deductions that you should have, we can help you file an amended return. On average, we believe that we save families
and individuals between $100 to 300 in filing their regular,
current year tax return, just an ordinary tax return, over what they might pay if they went to a
paid preparer. If they had to do a specialty return, you
know, we could be saving you several thousand dollars because you know that’s a lot of work to prepare several years worth of prior year
or amended returns. So if you’re within our income guidelines which are set according to eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit. I know that’s jargon. Please consider coming to Community Action
Duluth to get your taxes done for free. We can save you several hundred dollars. We combine you filing with direct deposit and we can get your tax return refund back
to you in a matter of weeks. You know between one week, maybe two weeks. It’s truly competitive with going to a paid
tax preparer. I have to say that one of the best things about tax site at Community Action Duluth is that it’s a Community Action Duluth program and we are here to help you leverage your
tax refund For maximum benefit. You can combine free tax prep with employment
counseling with financial literacy education with community engagement education with working on policy and learning how to get engaged in the political
process. And we believe that all of these programs
work together synergistically so that, you know, you’re not really taking
two steps ahead by using two programs of Community Action
Duluth, you’re maybe taking two and a half to three
steps ahead. Thank you. Hi. My name is Julia Cheng and I was a photojournalist for about 16 years before I moved here to Duluth in 2004. After about a year or two here in Duluth, I started thinking about making a change in
