Watch and share this video, so the world will be aware of what is happening with the Education, with teachers, in the Olympic City of Rio de Janeiro. My name is Rafael Procopio and I’m a Math teacher in a public school here in Rio de Janeiro, called Escola Municipal Rosa da Fonseca. But today I’ll not talk about Mathematics. But I’ll talk about Education and citizenship. You can only be free if you can think by yourself. You can only see what happens, and move to change the status quo if you’re critical enough. And it is thinking of the quality of education and the dignity of the profession that teachers, in Rio de Janeiro, are on strike! Rio de Janeiro will host the final match of the 2014 World Cup and the Olympic Games of 2016. It’s a thriving, beautiful city, known as the Marvelous City. Rio’s got Christ, The Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, Copacabana, samba… But treats its educators like this: Does repression, violence, bombs… combine with Education? We’re fighting for other people’s children to have a better education and a chance to change their reality through Education. For the government it’s not interesting if there are many “thinking people”, because people who think are dangerous for them. For politicians it doesn’t matter if we have knowledge, if we know how to think, because if we know it, who will elect them? Over the years I’ve seen the scrapping of education in Brazil. First as a student, now as a teacher. Low wages, lack of infrastructure and populist, electioneering resources are increasingly commonplace. Watching the disrespectfull way that our governor and mayor have conducted the strike of our category, I can only conclude that they are interested in everything else, but not in improving the quality of education… of public education in our city, in our state. Our struggle, before anything else, is for better working conditions, that would provide students with the best opportunities in their lives. There are those people who say we only want money. It’s not only that. However, we want money too. Why not? To prepare a good and interesting lesson we need time to study. Nobody can prepare good and interesting lessons all the year with 8, 10, 12 classes, and working everyday, three shifts. The government says that they’re offering us 40 hours per week of working. But offering that with low wages does not help at all. We need to live with dignity. We want the right to leisure, entertainment, traveling. We also need time to recycle and continue to instruct us. After all we are teachers, for God’s sake! If you, dear governors, think that money is not important, please be coherent. Relinquish your high salaries and try to live for a month with the wage of a teacher! My biggest dream is that we can now form a critical mass, who understands the need to clean up this huge latrine that the City Council, the Congress became… It is not possible that we see on TV a real massacre to the right to think and to assert, and then we stay inert. That’s enough! Enough of disrespect to teachers, to students, to society! NO MORE THIS NEODICTATORSHIP, PRETENDING TO BE A DEMOCRACY!
