At Cambridge Assessment English, At Cambridge Assessment English, our exams are backed by extensive research into how children develop language skills. Our exams for young children are designed to make children’s early language learning experiences positive and fun, and build their confidence in using English. Cambridge English Qualifications gives learners regular milestones to keep them motivated at every step from Pre-A1 Starters, to A1 Movers and then to A2 Flyers… all the way up to C2 Proficiency. Starters, Movers and Flyers are a real celebration of what children can do in English. Exams are interactive, colourful and activity based, motivating children to learn. They include tasks they enjoy such as: colouring in, finding the differences, reading short stories and matching exercises. So it doesn’t feel like they are taking an exam at all. There is also no pass or fail. All children receive an award with shields that record their achievements in each of the four skills: Reading and Writing, Speaking and Listening. In January 2018, we updated Starters, Movers and Flyers to make sure we continue leading the way in assessing young learners. We know from customer feedback that teachers, parents and learners love the tests, but we wanted to keep them relevant to the evolving needs of learners and their schools. Because of this we aligned Starters, Movers, and Flyers more closely with the Common European Framework of Reference, the CEFR and with Key, Preliminary, First and beyond. How we have reflected this in the changes is to give children more of an opportunity to speak and communicate in the exam. We have also introduced a productive writing task for Movers and Flyers. These changes across the tests mean that there is more of an opportunity for learners to show us exactly what they know and can do. To help get ready for the exams, there are resources to help children along their journey: free sample tests, word lists, games, online activities and videos. For parents there are top tips and information to support and motivate children as they learn. We also have a wide range of free resources to help schools and teachers feel confident in preparing for the exams. Starters, Movers and Flyers are a real celebration of what children can do. The exams are their first fun steps in learning English and lay the future foundations for their success in English.

  1. An excellent intro to get interested and find the many useful materials and tips on the Cambridge English website!

  2. Is the Video Description "Pre-A1 Starters, A2 Movers and B1 Flyers" correct? Shouldn't it be "Pre-A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers"?
