  5. I'm learning calculus in my own time at a later stage in life, stuff I missed out on in school due to administrative errors. I appreciate that this manipulation of algebraic fractions is important to be able to follow a presentation of calculus without getting lost. I would say that for this material it is important to thoroughly understand the rules of manipulation of ordinary fractions and powers. Once you have this under your belt this topic becomes relatively easy as it is essentially applying the same rules in a logical and consistent manner.
