New York Trying To Boost Oversight Of Private Schools

COMEY HAD BEEN DISGRACED BY THE REPORT. THE NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION WANTS TO BOOST OVERSIGHT OF PRIVATE AND RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS. THIS AMONG COMPLAINT THAT SOME ARE SKIPPING SECULAR EDUCATION. JENNIFER MCLOGAN REPORTS. Reporter: OPENING DAY AT KELLENBURG, ONE OF HUNDREDS OF PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN THE STATE. THIS IS MY THIRD CHILD THAT’S COMING THROUGH. WE LOVE IT HERE. I THINK THIS PROGRAM SURPASSES WHAT IS BEING OFFERED IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Reporter: PARENTS AND TEACHERS OPPOSED TO A STATE PROPOSAL THAT COULD HAVE MAJOR IMPLICATIONS FOR ALL INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS. FOR 100 YEARS WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE STATUS OF SUBSTANTIAL EQUIVALENCY. Reporter: THEY CALL THE PROPOSAL OVERSIGHT BY LOCAL PUBLIC DISTRICTS UNACCEPTABLE AND A CONFLICT OF INTEREST. WE CERTAINLY ARE OBLIGATED TO GAVE AN EQUIVALENT EDUCATION TO THE STUDENTS AND WE HAVE SUCCEEDED IN THAT. Reporter: THE NEW YORK STATE ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS SAID THAT FEWER THAN 2% OF ALL NONPUBLIC SCHOOLS STATEWIDE ARE UNDER PREFORMING. THE STATE SHOULD STEP IN AND REQUIRE DRASTIC CHANGES IN THOSE SITUATIONS SAY SOME BUT QUESTION MONITORING ALL HIGH ACHIEVING PRIVATE SCHOOLS. I JUST DON’T THINK ITS WARRANTD THAT THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS COME IN AND DECIDE WHAT OUR PROGRAM SHOULD BE. THAT’S WHY WE PICKED THE SCHOOL. WE DON’T BELIEVE ANY OTHER AGENCY SHOULD HAVE THE WEIGH IN ON THE DECISION MAKING. Reporter: ALL STUDENTS DESERVE THE PROTECTIONS OF THE STATE. TO UNSEARCH THEY ARE LIVING UP TO THE RESPONSIBILITIES THAT THEY CLAIM THEY ARE MEETING. THIS IS NOT ANTI RELIGIOUS. Reporter: THE STATE BOARD IS TAKING PUBLIC COMMENT KNOWLEDGE UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2nd.
