Lackawanna City Council looks at changing police education requirements

THE OFFICIAL PERMIT FROM THE CITY. A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA MIGHT SOON BE ALL YOU NEED TO TAKE THE LACKAWANNA POLICE OFFICER EXAM. BUT THE PROPOSED CHANGE OF THE CITY’S REQUIREMENTS DID NOT GET A FINAL VOTE TONIGHT. NEWS 4’S CALLAN GRAY HEARD FROM PEOPLE BOTH FOR AND AGAINST THE PLAN. JACQUIE– COUNCIL MEMBERS SAY THE GOAL IS TO OPEN UP OPPORTUNITIES.. BUT SOME WORRY THAT COULD COME AT THE COST OF PUBLIC SAFETY. THE COUNCIL NOW PLANS HAVE MORE MEETINGS WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE MAYOR AS THEY DISCUSS THE POSSIBLE CHANGES. IN JUNE– THOUSANDS OF HOPEFULS PACKED IN TO TAKE THE FIRST BUFFALO POLICE EXAM SINCE THE CITY DROPPED IT’S COLLEGE REQUIREMENT.. NOW– THE CITY OF LACKAWANNA IS CONSIDERING A SIMILAR MOVE. ((7- :12 I THINK THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT ARE CAPABLE OF DOING THE JOB , THAT KNOW THE STREETS, THAT GREW UP IN TEH CITY THAT CAN HANDLE THE JOB WITHOUT HAVING A COLLEGE EDUCATION)) RIGHT NOW APPLICANTS NEED TO HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, OR G-E-D, AND EITHER AT LEAST THREE YEARS OF ACTIVE MILITARY EXPERIENCE… OR HAVE AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE… OR HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST 60 COLLEGE CREDIT HOURS. COUNCILMAN JOE JERGE SAYS THEY ARE LOOKING AT CHANGING IT SO YOU ONLY HAVE TO BE 21 YEARS OLD.. AND HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA TO TAKE THE TEST. BUT THEY WANT TO INCLUDE A STIPULATION– TO GET A PROMOTION ONCE YOU’RE ON THE FORCE– YOU’D NEED TO COMPLETE THOSE 60 HOURS OF COLLEGE CREDIT. HE SAYS THE IDEA CAME UP AFTER A RESIDENT COMPLAINED THE POLICE DEPARTMENT ISN’T DIVERSE ENOUGH. (( 4 — :13 THIS WASN’T JUST A MEANS TO ADD DIVERSITY TO THE FORCE IT CERTAINLY ONE OF THE DRIVERS TO PUTTING IN ON THE AGENDA FOR APPROVAL BUT WE’D LIKE TO GET A BROADER SCOPE OF INDIVIDUALS APPLYING FOR THE JOB)) BUT COMMUNITY ACTIVIST JOHN INGRAM HAS CONCERNS. ((SOT 1- :05 WE DONT NEED TO LOWER THE QUALIFICATIONS WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THE STANDARDS ARE SET AND SET HIGH TO PROTECT THE RESIDENTS IF YOU LOWER IT THAT DOESN’T HELP US THAT HURTS US)) JERGE SAYS THEY’RE STILL WORKING OUT THE DETAILS.. ((5- :05 WE’RE NOT INTERESTED IN HIRING AN 18 YEAR OLD KID OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL AND GIVING THEM A BADGE AND A GUN AND EXPECT THEM TO GO OUT AN DO THE JOB)) THE MOTION WAS TABLED THIS EVENING FOR FURTHER STUDY… SO THE COUNCIL CAN MEET WITH THE MAYOR AND POLICE DEPARTMENT.. JERGEE SAYS WHILE THEY CAN MAKE
