Kid President Throws a Surprise Party for a Retiring Teacher

-Well, hi, Kid President! There's this really awesome
1st-grade teacher. Her name is Ms. Flexer, and she's been teaching
for a really long time here at our school. She's retiring this year, and it would be really nice
for her to know exactly the kind of impact
that she has had over her time here
at Cole Elementary School. -All right! Let's do it! [ Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh! ] -We're here today because
Ms. Flexer has been teaching for 41 years and she's retiring, so today we just want
to surprise her with a roomful
of her former students and let her know how much
we appreciate her. -You always talked about whose class
you were gonna get next year, and I got really excited that
I was gonna get her classroom. -She cares about your life — not only, like,
your school life, but she also cares about your,
like, personal life. -As you know, we're here today
to honor Ms. Flexer, who you all know
as your 1st-grade teacher. She'll be here in just a minute. [ All murmuring ] -Shh! -Good morning, everybody.
Everything good? I'm sorry. [ Cheers and applause ] -Come in. -Look at your
first-year student over here in the red shirt. -Oh, my — -She's made such a — -Ohhh. -I love you. [ Laughter ]
-Oh, my God. I just was talking about you. Oh, my God! I keep looking at them, and — Oh, my God. I keep — I don't — I — Y'all, I'm so embarrassed,
I don't even — [ Laughter ] -Ms. Flexer,
everyone has either prepared something to say to you
or they've written you a letter. -Oh, my God. -I believe it was 1994
when I was in your class. You were always
my favorite teacher, and you also have
my little cousins here now. -You wrote the sweetest letters
in my report cards. You were definitely
one of the sweetest teachers I have ever had. -I remember in 1st grade,
you pushed me and my sister to do so well, and I think
that's what makes you, like, the great teacher that you are. -[ Voice breaking ] And I
remember one particular — one particular day in school, for some reason, you asked me
to sing a song or something, and you got really excited,
and you were like, "Oh, my God. That's so wonderful. Go next door
and sing it for them." [ Laughter ] [ Crying ]
So, you had me walk around to, I think, two or three
different classrooms, singing this one song. But for the first time, I didn't feel
like I was awkward. I felt like something I could do
was special. I really appreciate it.
Thank you so much. -Thank you. -I was a timid little blonde, and your love for me
gave me the confidence to grow into the woman
I am today. You hold such a special place
in my heart, and I will cherish the impact
you've had on my life forever. -Since I've been out
of your 1st-grade class, I got a scholarship to run track
at Middle Tennessee State. -You're an amazing teacher,
and I graduated from MTSU and I'm starting
on my Master's this fall, and I think because of you, it's how I got this far
in my life, and I really thank you. -"I do wish
that I could be there personally to deliver this note
and give you a huge hug, but, alas,
the trials and tribulations of law-school final exams
come between us. What is important for me,
though, is that you were never
just a teacher — you were a friend. You are a friend, and you will
always be a great friend." [ Cheers and applause ] -Okay. So, Ms. Flexer…
-Yes, ma'am? -…this medal
is presented to you on behalf of all the teachers
and all the students and, most importantly,
by Kid President. This is your Medal of Awesome. -Oh, thank you. [ Cheers and applause ] I was very, very surprised. I'm never at a loss for words, and, really, I was sort of
at a loss for words. – Watch "Kid President:
