Jacob Teaches about Pride and Chastity | Jacob 2–3 | Book of Mormon

Stop this!
Stop! Are you all right? Thank you. Come on,
let’s go. Beloved … this day I am weighed down
with much more desire and anxiety for
the welfare of your souls than I have hitherto been. Yea, it grieveth my soul and causeth me to
shrink with shame before the presence
of my Maker, that I must testify unto you concerning the
wickedness of your hearts. And also it grieveth me that I must use so much boldness
of speech concerning you, before your wives
and your children, many of whose feelings
are exceedingly tender and chaste and
delicate before God, which thing is
pleasing unto God. Wherefore,
it burdeneth my soul that I should be constrained, because of the commandment
which I have received from God, to admonish you
according to your crimes, to enlarge the wounds of those
who are already wounded, instead of consoling
and healing their wounds. But I must do according to the strict commands of God, and tell you concerning
your wickedness and abominations. And this is the word
which I declare: many of you have
begun to search for gold, and for silver, and for all manner
of precious ores, in the which this land
doth abound most plentifully. And because some of
you have obtained more abundantly than
that of your brethren ye are lifted up in the
pride of your hearts, and wear stiff necks
and high heads because of the
costliness of your apparel, and persecute your
brethren because ye suppose ye
are better than they. Do ye suppose that God justifieth you in this thing?
Nay. He condemneth you, and if ye persist
in these things His judgments must
speedily come unto you. O that ye would listen unto
the word of His commands, and let not this
pride of your hearts destroy your souls! Think of your brethren
like unto yourselves, and be free with
your substance, that they may be
rich like unto you. But before ye seek for riches, seek ye for the
kingdom of God. And after ye have
obtained a hope in Christ ye shall obtain riches,
if ye seek them; and ye will seek them
for the intent to do good— to clothe the naked,
and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to
the sick and the afflicted. The one being is as precious
in His sight as the other. I make an end of
speaking unto you concerning this pride. And were it not that
I must speak unto you concerning a grosser crime, my heart would rejoice
exceedingly because of you. Thus saith the Lord: They understand
not the scriptures, for they seek to
excuse themselves in committing whoredoms, because of the things
which were written concerning David,
and Solomon his son. David and Solomon truly had
many wives and concubines, which thing was
abominable before me, saith the Lord. For there shall not
any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines
he shall have none; for I,
the Lord God, delight in the
chastity of women. For if I will,
saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall
hearken unto these things. For behold, I, the Lord,
have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of
the daughters of my people because of the wickedness
and abominations of their husbands. And I will not suffer,
saith the Lord of Hosts, that the cries of the fair
daughters of this people, which I have led out
of the land of Jerusalem, shall come up unto me
against the men of my people, saith the Lord of Hosts. My brethren, ye have come unto
great condemnation. Ye have done
greater iniquities than the Lamanites,
our brethren. For behold,
their husbands love their wives, and their wives
love their husbands; and their husbands
and their wives love their children. But ye have broken the hearts of
your tender wives, and lost the confidence
of your children, because of your bad
examples before them; and the sobbings
of their hearts ascend up to God
against you. I speak unto you that
are pure in heart. Look unto God with
firmness of mind, and pray unto Him
with exceeding faith, and He will console
you in your afflictions, and He will plead your cause, and send down
justice upon those who seek your destruction. But wo, wo, unto you that
are not pure in heart; for except ye repent the
land is cursed for your sakes. And also,
remember that ye may, because of your filthiness, bring your children
unto destruction, and their sins be heaped upon
your heads at the last day. O my brethren, arouse the faculties
of your souls; shake yourselves
that ye may awake from the
slumber of death; and loose yourselves
from the pains of hell that ye may not become
angels to the devil. Amen. -Amen. Come, children.

  1. These chapters always seemed angry to me, but put in context I can feel God and Jacob’s great love for these people – thank you!

  2. This video has touched me deeply. Something about these videos truly brings the scriptures alive. I love how Jacob was portrayed in this video. I also love the personal touches with the crippled man and the man and his family.

  3. I could really feel the Spirit as the man who played Jacob talked. What a great experience it must have been for everyone in this to recreate a simple yes beautiful event from The Book of Mormon. Love it.

  4. This video has touched me most of all. It is a perfect reminder to me of how blessed I am and how quickly that turns around when I make wrong choices. Thank you very much for this.

  5. This is heart wrenching because it is so pertinent today. We all, every one of us, have need to humble ourselves and repent before God. This is one of the great messages of The Book of Mormon. It is not a message of anger and despair. It a message of love and hope.

  6. This made me cry because it is true for our time as well as then. We need to heed this warning before disaster falls on us.

  7. While serving a mission in New Jersey, DJ Borst and his companion were discussing chastity with a young couple, when the room became a little quiet and awkward. It turns out that the couple was not married. Repeat visits to the apartment were met with a closed door. The missionaries knew someone was home, but no answer.

A couple of weeks later, DJ and his companion were walking down the street, when they heard someone yelling, and they turned to see a woman running towards them, waving both arms. The young woman caught up with them, and between breaths, asked, "Where have you guys been?! … I've been looking all over for you… I gave up my boyfriend to join your church."

  8. This was one of the most powerful videos so far. My heart was truly moved, because of the families I've seen suffer today from these harsh things. I'm so grateful for these wonderful reminders that the Lord has provided for us through His prophets and the scriptures.

  9. I like it that the rebuked man looks at Jacob and Jacob looks back without any condemnation. Too often, those with righteous intentions miss the mark by failing to show love along with the correction they give. Jacob speaks very clearly and directly here about right and wrong, but he also speaks with love. We need more of that combination.

  10. Wanted to share how much I loved the inclusion of women in this video. Jacob's wife. The woman whose heart was breaking. It was just a wonderful video. I was actually pleasantly surprised that it was longer this time. As always holds up iPad MORE PLEASE!

  11. The witness of the Holy Ghost/ Holy Spirit was strong as we made this video. It was in the 30-40 degrees in the morning and 85-90 degrees in the afternoon while filming. It was a great blessing to be a part of the background actors. Jacob and other actors were remarkable! It strengthened my testimony that the Book of Mormon is true. I’ve had my testimony for 44 years. Since age 15. It is the solid foundation that I fell back upon when life gets difficult.

  12. Well, too bad certain nameless individuals who led them pioneers, back in the day, down into The Promised Valley forgot to reread this section, not that it ever hindered their wealth collection very much either way..

  13. I loved this episode – I felt the Spirit through out… The Book of Mormon is the true word of God.

  14. My 10-year-old son, Jacob, just watched this with me. This is his comment, "Women are special, and we need to treat them that way."

  15. I really enjoyed how this video made the Book of Mormon alive in a way that does'nt usually happen with my personal story. Seeing that man come to a knowledge of his wrongs and feel sorrow for them was really powerful.

  16. I'm sorry to leave this comment here, but I don't know where else to do it. I think it would be SO helpful to people that want to watch the Book of Mormon Videos – to have a small NUMBER on each one so watchers would know that they are watching in chronological order (if that's what they want to do). I started watching a few months ago and after a while I was lost in trying to find what I'd missed. I do know the order of the books, which helps me, but I know a lot of people that may take a look at these beautiful videos, may not know what order to look for. Could this be done – even going back to put some more organization into the process of watching the videos in order? Thanks for these insightful and spiritual teachings from the Book of Mormon. I have loved seeing the four original brothers showing love and playing like brothers usually do. It opened my eyes to the reality of these stories. Thank you.

  17. My favorite part was where the sinning man turned an Jacob smiled at him. As if to say I still love you even though you transgressed.

  18. I thought the parallels were very interesting to watch as Jacob was talking. The person who hid their costly apparel under the blanket, which in a way is a metaphor of how we hide the things that we are prideful of when we're around people at church or other people in general.
The other thing was the brother the video focused on at the end (8:45). How he looks down, then at his children, and then starts to weep. Then his son holds him, and Jacob gives him a nod at the end that in my mind signifies that despite his mistakes, there's still hope for him if he repents. It may be difficult, but repentance is a joyful experience and we will be forgiven as we repent.

  19. What a beautiful, tender, lesson for us. Let us remember to read the words of Jacob. And remember to love, help and support those who struggle with these things especially chastity. As taboo as it is they need us to be loving and to understand their infinite worth as a child of God.

  20. Those words of Jacob , spoken thousands of years ago , are still as actual now as they where then , maybe even more so now , in this wicked world we live in , i am glad i have the book of Mormon in my life , it helps me to stay on the right path ( together with the Bible and other standard works and the words of our current prophet and apostles ) !!!

  21. Jacob 2:17 is a condemnation of the modern church. Much of the rest condemns the early church leaders such as Joseph, Brigham and others. Great chapters to ponder and study.

  22. My heart goes out to Jacob and the things he went through; his older brothers were especially harsh on him. All he knew was “life on the road” and saw the effects of how very difficult family contentions affected his parents. But as difficult as it was, he became a better man because of it and his words convey authority from the Lord. It’s not included in this video (maybe another one?) but my favorite phrase from him is his unique perspective, “Our lives passed away like as it were unto us a dream, we being a lonesome and a solemn people, wanderers, cast out from Jerusalem, born in tribulation, in a wilderness, and hated of our brethren, which caused wars and contentions; wherefore, we did mourn out our days."
Haunting and beautiful all at the same time.

  23. I too felt the spirit of these teachings. We all fall short, we see ourselves in this, which is what’s meant to happen as we read the Book of Mormon and compare it to ourselves. Truly a great gift in technology to see this in action as opposed to reading it. More truths are revealed. Love it. Great work on the lords behalf.
