Getting Help as a Distance Education Student

Welcome to the “Getting Help as a Distance Education Student” tutorial, created by the Research Services department at the Mississippi State University Libraries. In this video, you will learn how to use our “Ask a Librarian” chat service, schedule a research consultation with your library subject specialist, and register for online workshops offered by the MSU Libraries. Our Research Services department has a number of ways for you to get help with your research projects, including via email, phone, texting, and even Twitter. You can find all of our contact information by going to the MSU Libraries website and clicking the “Ask a Librarian” button in the upper right corner of the page. One popular way of getting help is by using our “Ask a Librarian” chat service, which you can access whenever a librarian is available by clicking the green “Live chat” button in the upper right corner of the page. You’ll be asked to fill out some basic information, including your affiliation with MSU. Make sure to select “Distance Learning Undergraduate Student” or “Distance Learning Graduate Student” as your affiliation. Then you can type out your question and click “Start Chat” to get help from a librarian. if you are conducting more advanced or in-depth research, you may wish to contact your library subject specialist, since they’ll be more knowledgeable about conducting research in your field of study. To find your subject specialist, click the “Ask a Librarian” icon in the upper right corner of the page, then click “Find a subject specialist.” This will display a list of librarians and their subjects specialties, as well as their contact information. If you’re not sure who to contact, you can also click the “Schedule a research consultation” link on the right-hand side of the page, and then fill out a consultation request form. One of our librarians will contact you to make sure you get the help you need. Finally, the MSU Libraries offer online workshops on a variety of topics, including citation managers, Microsoft Excel, and the dissertation process. To find the full list of online workshops and enroll, go to the Distance Education Information Portal and scroll down to the “Upcoming Online Workshops” section. Click the link that says “Full List of Upcoming Online Workshops” for a complete list, and click the green “Register!” button to enroll in a specific workshop.
