EVEN IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, IT’S DISTRACTING. THAT HAS TO BE A BENEFIT. PUBLIC SPACE DEMANDS ARE DIFFERENT SENSE OF SCALE. AND I THINK YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO DO THAT. IF YOU DON’T DO THAT IT ENDS UP WITH SOMETHING VERY DIMINUTIVE AND REALLY BECOMES ANCILLARY TO THE SPACE ITSELF.>>I AM OF THE OPINION THAT ART HEALS AND THAT IS CALMING AND REASSURING AND IT’S VERY BEST. I WANTED TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE HOSPITAL THAT STARTS BRINGING US TO A VISUAL LEVEL THAT IS A BIT MORE COMMENSURATE WITH OUR MEDICAL SUCCESS. I THINK ALL OF THE TRUSTEES FEEL IT IS THEIR HOSPITAL AND WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO MAKE IT THE BEST HOSPITAL POSSIBLE.>>TWO YEARS IN THE MAKING AND NOW A PERMANENT FIXTURE AT THE CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND MEDICINE. ♪>>CRUISING THE WATER ON A SUMMER EVENING SOUNDS SWEET AND NOW YOU CAN SEE ART AT THE SAME TIME. ALL ABOARD THE ART BOAT.>>IT IS CALLED THE ART BOAT AND IT’S A NEW WAY TO CRUISE AND ENJOY THE VIEW OF MANHATTAN FROM THE WATER AND SEE CUTTING-EDGE URBAN STREET ART ON BOARD. PEOPLE RUNNING THE ART BOAT WANT YOU TO KNOW THIS IS NOT JUST GRAFFITI.>>GRAFFITI IS DONE HASTILY WHEREAS THIS IS TRULY THOUGHT OUT, REALLY ARTFUL, AND A LOT OF THESE PIECES SPEAK TO DIFFERENT AUDIENCES.>>IT EXTENDS BEYOND THE PIECES ON DISPLAY. THE VESSEL LOOKS LIKE NO OTHER YACHT ON THE WATER, IT IS WRAPPED IN ART.>>IT WAS DONE IN THE ELEMENTS OUTSIDE ESPECIALLY WITH DIFFERENT VARYING CANVASES.>>IT WAS A BOLD MOVE. ALL OF OUR COMPETITORS IN THE HARBOR THOUGHT YOU GUYS ARE CRAZY, JUST TO GET A WHITE BOAT AND CONVERT IT INTO A MOVING ART VENUE.>>INSIDE YOU’LL FIND ALL KINDS OF PAINTINGS FROM A DIVERSE GROUP OF ARTISTS.>>THERE ARE SOME STRONG POWERFUL MESSAGES THAT SPEAK TO THE ARTIST BACKGROUNDS AND WHAT NEW YORK CITY IS ALL ABOUT. WE ARE PROUD TO HAVE A LOT OF THESE ARTISTS ON BOARD. SARAH TAKES ON THE CHALLENGE OF WOMEN THESE DAYS WITH FEMINISM AND ACTIVISM. ONE OF MY FAVORITE PIECES IN HERE IS A PHOTOREALISTIC PIECE THAT SHOWS TWO HANDS HOLDING A DISCO BALL. WHAT IT REPRESENTS IS THE RISING OF THE SUN AND THE MOON AT NIGHT. IT LOOKS ALMOST LIKE A REAL PHOTO BUT IT IS DONE BY SPRAY PAINT. I CAN’T IMAGINE BEING ABLE TO MAKE A STRAIGHT LINE WITH A SPRAY PAINT CAN. THAT IS A GOOD ONE RIGHT THERE, SEINFELD WITH A PIGEON. ICONIC NEW YORKERS LIKE JERRY AS WELL AS SOME OTHER PIECES IN HERE.
