LOVE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT ANIMALS AND SCIENTIFIC THINGS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. RIGHT NOW I
WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT A VERY IMPORTANT ANIMAL FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER. NOVEMBER
IS AN AMAZING MONTH WITH SO MANY EXCITING THINGS THAT HAPPEN. ONCE OCTOBER IS DONE MANY
CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD THINK OF THIS TIME OF YEAR AS HARVEST SEASON. THAT IS WHY I’D
LIKE TO TALK ABOUT ONE OF THE TASTIEST FOODS MANY FAMILIES EAT AT THEIR THANKSGIVING MEAL
WHICH IS THE TURKEY. NOW ONE OF THE STORIES OF WHY PEOPLE THINK THE MENU FOR THANKSGIVING
INCLUDES THE TURKEY IS BECAUSE OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS. SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT WHEN CHRISTOPHER
COLUMBUS FIRST ARRIVED IN THE NEW WORLD HE OF COURSE THOUGHT THAT HE HAD LANDED IN INDIA.
AFTER HE ARRIVED THE STORY GOES THAT COLUMBUS THOUGHT THE BIRD HE DISCOVERED WAS A PEACOCK.
SO THINKING THAT THE BIRD HE HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE WAS A PEACOCK, HE CALLED IT, “TUKA,”
WHICH IS PEACOCK IN TAMIL, AN INDIAN LANGUAGE. ANOTHER INTERESTING THING ABOUT THE TURKEY
IS THE NATIVE AMERICAN NAME FOR TURKEY WHICH IS FIRKEY. SOME SAY THIS IS ALSO HOW THE TURKEY
GOT THEIR NAME THINKING OF IT WAS COMBINED WITH CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS’, “TUKA,” AND THE
NATIVE AMERICAN’S, “FIRKEY,” TO MAKE TURKEY. AS FAR BACK AS 1000 A.D. NATIVE AMERICANS
HAVE RAISED TURKEYS FOR FOOD. STORY HAS IT THAT AZTEC INDIANS IN MEXICO WERE RAISING
THEM AS EARLY AS 200 B.C. NOW HERE IN THE UNITED STATES SINCE 1947, THE NATIONAL TURKEY
FEDERATION HAS PRESENTED A LIVE TURKEY AND TWO DRESSED TURKEYS TO THE PRESIDENT. THE
PRESIDENT DOES NOT EAT THE LIVE TURKEY. HE, “PARDON,S’ IT WHICH MEANS HE LETS THE TURKEY
GO AND ALLOWS IT TO LIVE OUT ITS DAYS ON A HISTORICAL FARM. SO DO TURKEYS GO, “GOBBLE,
GOBBLE?” WAIT A MINUTE. ONLY MALE TURKEYS CALLED TOMS GOBBLE. FEMALE TURKEYS CALLED
HENS CACKLE. AS OF 2014 HERE IN THE UNITED STATES MINNESOTA HAS BEEN THE USDA’S #1 STATE
FOR RAISING TURKEYS WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER AMERICAN STATES. MINNESOTA FARMERS RAISED
AN ESTIMATED 44 MILLION TURKEYS IN YEAR OF 2013. AROUND 34 MILLION TURKEYS WERE RAISED
IN THE SECOND PLACE STATE WHICH IS NORTH CAROLINA DURING 2013 TOO. WELL I HOPE YOU ENJOYED SOME
FUN FACTS ABOUT TURKEYS FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH ME PROFESSOR TAYLOR.
