Bedankt voor de uitleg! The Dutch integration exam now requires a section on Dutch cultural knowledge which includes a fair amount of knowing the education system and I could never keep it straight. This helps me keep everything in order!

Okay now i know that my life has been a lie and i thought that the netherlands and belgium had the same education system
The belgian education system
3-5 = kleuterschool (Toddlerschool…?)6-11/12 = Basis School (Basic school)12/13-17/18 = middelbare school/secundair (middle school)Idk the rest cuz i'm still in middle school soooo..
I think dutch edication system is easier than in america

Gymnasium is toch de hoogste niveau die je kan doen
Im dutch IM FRICKING DUTCH
I'm in the Basicsschool (Groep 7) and i still know all of this
You forgot to mention that when doing havo or vwo you have to choose certain subjects in year 3. When you are in year 3 you can choose something called: profiel (really roughly translated is profile but it's nothing like the profile you know) there are 4 different “profielen”; natuur&techniek (n roughly translated nature and technique so a lot of physics) natuur en gezondheid (roughly translated nature and health meaning a lot of biology) economie en maatschappij (economics and society meaning a lot of economic based) and cultuur and maatschappij (culture and society meaning a lot of art based subjects) each “profiel” has a different “vakkenpakket” (subjectpackage) they all have 3(?) mandatory subjects and then students will have to choose all the different types of subjects they want to add to that. Certain subjects can not ben ombine with certain “profielen” so you will have to figure that out, but for example if you chose a economics and society “profiel” but you really like Geography (which is added in culture and society) you have the option to take it as an extra subject.
I hope this sort of makes sense
I am Born in the Netherlands just like me whole family but if they explain it in Dutch I don’t understand it but this is easy to understand🤯🤩😍
I'm Dutch and I still found this incredibly useful. I Basically just bumbled my way trough high school and college. XD
Warning i'm going to say tha name dutch , i'm in the 4de leerjaar and where you live group 6 (6de leerjaar = group 8, 1st leerjaar = group 1)

i understand some dutch because i speak english and german
edit:I go to Gröning very often
Door het accent weet je gelijk dat jij uit Brabant/Limburg komt 😂
It's so weird how you can kind of understand dutch if youre german, but not quite
At least when it comes to reading
I think the main difference between HBO and WO is that WO prepares you for academics, and HBO prepares you for a higher level job. So if you would like to do research ir a PHD, or teach university, you really need to do WO. Also, in the Netherlands, HBO is not called university. A HBO BA is considered to be a university degree outside of the Netherlands only, which I think is rather interesting and strange. Anyway, Dutch people are extremely well and highly educated compared to most other countries, so we must do something right.
I was really happy when I found out that there was a animator I like was dutch
Not everyone is 12 at the end of Groep 8. Including me. This is rare, but you can perform really well to skip years which I did once in Groep 3, allowing me to finish basisschool at age 11 (And everyone was surprised when I told them my age, it got super annoying to explain it over and over). Also you can be put into the wrong equivalent of year/grade due to age, potentially skipping or redoing years.
Both are equally broken though…
80% van de mensen die dit kijken zijn Nederlands, wat doen jullie hier
You forgot gymnasium!!!!
This explains why everyone was confused over the fact I didn't know how to ride a bike at fifteen when I visited the Netherlands.
I got lost after the basic school part … 😭😭😭it confuse me the way it's divided so complicatedbut it seems that the Dutch has a great system 🙂
Cycling diploma? I’ve heard of a cycling proficiency test in the UK, but no one does it
Calculating. Us lazy Americans call it “math”.
While the amount of options is fascinating it's super convoluted. Our school system can use some work but is generally a straight line.
Elementary:Age 2-5 preschool (essentially social learning)5-6 kindergarten (entry skills letters, numbers, writing and reading)Grade 1 – 3 division oneGrade 4 – 6 division two
Jr high:Grade 7 – 9
Post:Continuing education (usually 1 year programs to pick up extra skills like typing, higher reading and such)Certificate college (low level job specific programs such as secretary, florist…)College (higher level diplomas and transfer programs like development therapist)University (2-8 years for your big programs, teacher, doctor)Technical institution (trade learning. Repair jobs, construction, design…)Apprenticeship school (extra learning on stuff that can't be learned on the job)
Within all of that we then have public, private, religious, residential and bilingual.
Ah! So it essentially looks like a more complicated version of the German system where you eventually go into either Gymnasium, Hauptschule, or Realschule. (native germans feel free to correct me, I'm english, but have some german family)
Wait I been to college?
I looked up the wikipedia page about this cuz I was reading a webtoon, called "acception" I think it was, and it was set in a Dutch "high school". The fact that they called it high school was confusing since I didn't think people in other countries would have the same system the US has. :vThe wikipedia page just made me more confused lmao.
