Elon Musk’s Ultimate Advice for Students & College Grads – HOW TO SUCCEED IN LIFE

So what, what advice do I have
for college graduates? Certainly, I do want you to apply for a
job at solar city or Tesla or SpaceX and if not then, if that doesn’t
work for whatever reason then apply to jobs at other
companies in that arena or try starting a company. If you study engineering and you
figure out how to design new things then it’s relatively easy to start a company you just need to get a few like-minded people with you. I have to say that the space business is quite it’s quite hard to start a
company in space business because it’s such a capital intensive business So it may be better to do
something in Solar power or if you’re gonna do it in cars do it in, as kind of a component supplier
for cars or something like that. Musk has college degrees
in business and physics but SpaceX is his first venture in aerospace. How did you get the expertise to be the chief
technology officer of a rocket ship company? Well, I do have a physics background,
that’s helpful as a foundation and then I read a lot of books and
talked to a lot of, lot of smart people. don’t just follow the trend you may have heard me say that it’s good to think in terms of the
physics approach of first principles which is rather than reasoning by analogy you boil things down to the most
fundamental truths you can imagine and you reason up from there and this is a good way to figure out if if something really makes sense or if it’s just what everybody else is doing and it’s hard to think that way, you can’t
think- think that way about everything it takes a lot of effort but if you’re trying to do something
new it’s the best way to think and that framework was
developed by physicists to figure out counterintuitive
things like quantum mechanics. So it’s really a powerful
powerful method. And I want to know what is the one thing
that has surprised you about your life? Well, I simply I’m surprised
about the whole thing honestly I certainly didn’t expect to be, to be, for any
of these things to happen, honestly Yeah, I just you know, I know I wanted
to be involved in technology and in fact the only reason I
started a company back in 95 an internet company was
because I couldn’t get it there were only a few internet companies
and I couldn’t get a job at any of them I tried to get a job at at
Netscape and I sent my resume and I tried hanging out in the lobby,
but I was too shy to talk to anyone and it was like okay, well I guess
I’ll have to start a company cause I can’t get a job anywhere. thank you I wouldn’t say I’m fearless in fact I I think I fear,
I feel fear quite strongly but I if the if what we’re doing isn’t if what I’m doing I think is important
enough then I just override the fear so, but it’s not as though I don’t fear, I feel
fear like more stronger than I would like. I think also people tend to
overweight risk on a personal level it’s one thing if you’ve got you know
a mortgage to pay and kids to support and that if you were to deviate from your job than well, how are you going to feed
your family and pay the rent? Okay, that’s understandable but let’s say you’re young and
you’re just coming out of college or coming out of high school or whatever What do you- What do you risk? You know you’re not gonna starve, I mean… It’s really, certainly not in
any kind of modern economy It’s so easy to earn enough money
just to live somewhere and eat food. I don’t know what other people- what they are afraid of they are mostly afraid of failure I think. People should be less risk-averse
when there’s not much at risk. What is education like? you’re basically downloading data
and algorithms into your brain and it’s it’s actually amazingly
bad in conventional education It’s like it shouldn’t be like this huge chore like the more you can gamify the
process of learning the better. I always had sort of a slight existential crisis because I was trying to figure
out what does it all mean? like what’s the purpose of things? and I came to the conclusion that if we can
advance the the knowledge of the world if we can do things that expand the
scope and and scale of consciousness Then we’re better able to
ask the right questions and become more enlightened and that’s really the only way forward. What drives you? what what is it that when
you wake up in the morning do you see a problem and you want to solve it? The thing that drives me is that I want
to be able to think about the future and feel good about that so that, you know we’re doing what we can to have the future be, be as good as possible to be inspired by what is likely to happen and to look forward to the next day. So that’s that’s what
really really drives me is trying to figure out how do we, how
do we make sure that things are great? I’m gonna be so and that’s the unlined principle
behind Tesla and SpaceX is that, I think it’s pretty important that we accelerate the transition
to sustainable generation and consumption of energy. It’s inevitable, but it’s- it matters if, if it happens sooner or later And then SpaceX is about helping
make life multi-planetary and doing what we can to
continue the dream of Apollo and ultimately make contribution
to life becoming multi-planetary. Let’s talk a little more about that I think everyone is very interested that
when you say making life multi-planetary yeah that’s exciting it is exciting So what’s your vision there? You know, I think
particularly for Americans you know, like if you think about it
America is a nation of explorers. People came here from
other parts of the world that you know chose to give up the
known in favor of the unknown. So I think exploration like the United States is a
distillation of the human spirit of exploration and So that’s why it appeals
to Americans so much you know you can see this when there was a shuttle tragedy
and seven people died and that’s that’s terrible but, you know a
lot of people die all the time but why do we care so much? because it was the dream of exploration
that was dying along with those people that’s why. I mean I thought both Tesla and
SpaceX would fail at the beginning You thought? Yeah, sure really? of course nevertheless you put all your money in them I expected to lose it, and well
technically what I thought was well I’ll take half the money from PayPal
and if I lose half of it that’s okay but then of course the companies
encounter difficulties and then, I have a choice of
either like let the company die or put you know all the
money into the companies and so I really don’t want the companies to die
so I put all the money in the companies yeah and then I had to borrow money form
friends to pay living expenses yes you know just looking just for
evidence of exceptional ability and if there’s a track record
of exceptional achievement then it’s likely that that
will continue into the future. Well, it really depends on the stakes if the stakes are high, if it’s really important then one should, then I, you know
overcome the fear and just do it anyway I essentially I mean I just drive overrides fear, but I feel the fear It’s kind of annoying, I wish I didn’t I wish I felt it less.

  1. He's riding the Wave,
Filling the void or Vector, Being in the Right place at the Right Time! Obviously He uses Quantum,
    Or Knows the Rules
Of Singularity and the Fears of Attraction *

  2. Those Solar Panels should not be on nice farm land at :53 seconds, instead on sand dunes, swamps, over water and roof tops then again even sand dunes probably have a purpose

  3. If I could only sit down with this man and have 1 conversation. I guarantee he would absolutely love some of the ideas I hold within my thoughts. They are 100% applicable, and could be revolutionary for SpaceX.

  4. My ultimate dream is to create a space-drilling company that work with Elon Musk's company to go and dig the underground of Mars for historical data.

  5. "If the stakes are important then we have to overcome the fear and just do it anyway.." Very humble, very great person…

  6. I love his spirit…it's so nonchalant yet not…we get so caught up in conservatism…but go out and do something that raises the spirit level…something that gives you the freedom to get things done despite the feeling that the world is falling apart.

  9. Easy to earn money, LOL…
Yeah for Genius ppl or ppl have connection or ppl who are lucky(like have someone to support them)…
I wonder what will happen if musk born in asia ? majority In asia, ppl were forced to work in any kind of work to get money and not to do thing what they capable or like, it was shown by the quality they produce….
In Asia, u build something new, ppl with more power than u will claim it is their and the produce and brand it is them while u work so hard to produce new things and what ? u get nothing… rich ppl in asia get everything… Majority in Asia is place where there is no originality and copy cat…

  10. Soon musk, you need to take a speech class. I can't stand to listen to you stutter not enunciate half of your words. It is so annoying that I have to stop watching.

  11. /oo yes Mr Musk there is 2 legend in the 21 century you Mr Musk born in a richy rich country named USA 🇺🇸 and I Mr Musk /oo born on a poor country and both will go to space /oo I with the AISA Rocket Noura 1 in 2050 /oo ARABO-ISLAMIC SPACE AGENCY try to stop me powered by PHLETON the earth company

  12. Musk only succeeded because Obama funded him billions
The muppet couldn’t even capital had to rely on a moron using our tax money for a publicity stunt
Musk funded projects 7 went bankrupt

  13. Elon Musk is, in fact, a new genre, a new archetype that leads to entrepreneurship, management, technology and the combination of everything that results in a mega competence. He is the embodiment of the idea of innovation, truly the symbol par excellence of the 21st century.

  14. Space company it's a good idea because you make a lot money lying to the world with ralasion to false space

  15. I don't agree with the idea of people try to make of something that are not or not meant to be. just let nature be and follow through things smoothly. nature will do it's job of making the right way of things. stop being a pigeon of the flock trying desperately to win over that piece of bread.

  16. stop putting musk in the light of an academic super brain. hes not. hes a successful businessman who likes to put his name (and JUST his name) on publications….as if he could do shit himself with neuroscience … or space… see neuralink

  17. Brain %7 Money %86 =King
Brain %86 Money %7 = servant of the king
    Welcome–this is À Fair world : )

  18. the most anxious people have ended up with the most money. This is what always shuts my ambition off for the most part. I know I just don't have to have it.

  19. There are 320 million people in the USA only about 3 million people will watch this video and others like it. t
That is LESS than 1 percent LIKE this if your a future 1 PERCENTER.

  20. VW / GM / Chrysler / Ford are now scared since they are now loosing market share to Tesla that they now are considering BEV cars to be a real thing

  21. It would be nice to know where going to live His five sons , i think Will be the safest place in the earth, or mars ???

  22. 9:09 What exactly was this again? I remember seeing it in the sky from California either last year or early 2019…

  23. Senseries Thank you Elon Musk I am very tire now . But you make my dream come true . YOU ARE THE BEST.BUT DO NOT LOOSE RESEARCH IN Tesla and HYPERLOOP.

  24. My respect for you, Elon. Thank you for this great motivation and your innovations. Powerwalls are great and I'm looking forward for it..!! M2S, great video..!! Thank you..!! 👍

  25. If you want to be like Musk.. you need to be insider elite.
Only way to make it in this world.. first you have to pass their casting couch. (obviously Elon had no trouble sucking d)
Then they will award you with multi-million dollar contracts.. with your promise to contribute to their campaign funds/agendas.
You can't get anywhere in this world without ripping off the taxpayers, or helping someone do it.

  26. Listen… I have a dream that one day I will revolutionise this world for the better. I want to create a working fusion reacter, create nano technology etc. I am 14 at this moment, I have started studying, the anxiety that runs through me is like none other. There is so much I want to learn and need to learn but it feels like it is just too much even though it is not. I have to acknowledge the brains power over me. The feeling of forcing yourself is terrible and first but overtime, it will go away; I think lol.

I have created a plan for everyday, I will study the following subjects: economics, mathematics, philosophy, morse code, psychology, behaviour of light and the electromagnetic spectrum. Once I master these following subjects, I move onto technology and sciences further and some other subjects along the way.

To all the big dreamers, you are not alone and keep working. DO NOT GIVE UP!

To become successful is difficult, resilience is important. There will be difficult and stressful times but in the end, it will all be worth it. Good luck

  27. Only 1% succeed because that's the only possible result. Our society is set up that way intentionally. Only that same 1% have enough power to change it. They don't because then, they'll lose that power. And it's very nice living in a country where 99% of the population has to do your dirty work just to get enough power to survive. Well, it's nice for the top 1% anyway…

  28. If you were successful it is easy to say the others did not work hard enough. How should you know….

  29. The aim is not Just being a person of success, but a success of person (Boy George said this).Thats why space and science may fail tremendously , much more than conceivable , otherwise available technology where to granted the happiness of life , many many decades ago, for all the planet.

  30. The comments inspired me more than the video. I'm starting a company now here in Brazil and it's been quite difficult to find room in the market, to keep investors interested and to maneuver in the tangled web that is brazillian bureaucracy, specially when we are so small and resourceless, but i'll make it no matter the cost.

  31. Anyone else who wants to be the next revolutionary person of this race, good luck and we will meet when we succed! Thank you Elon for this!

  32. To succeed you just have to sell your soul to devil…enjoy your miserable life. Open your eyes, you dont need that kind of succes, we just need love and a few material things. People like Elon Musk mayyybe in the begining wanted to do a better world but they always are corrupted by illuminatis…look how he works for Nasa (all fake corporation), and nobody wants to investigate things like free energy created by Nikola Tesla…wake up one person, the best person can not change the world, only everybody thogether can do that. By minimalistic and loved…very complicated goal, we always hear that, but i feel is true, the changes in the world starts with your personal changes. By a man of honor, love but with strengh.

  33. There are thousends of smarter peole who had great ideas and didn´t succeed. It´s like with rock stars! There are so many talented, hard working musicans, and 99,9% never succeed. Why? Because they where not lucky. YES! You need luck, and the right contacts! Or You are the son or daughter of rich people or people who have influence and power. If Musk i such a genius, than why Tesla is still struggling? Every company since paypal and zip two does only exist today, because of the money he made with these two companys. If paypal would not have been such a success, nobody would know Elon Musks name today. And only people who had success do write books about how to be successfull, or do videos about it. All the million people who are smarter, had the same approaches and worked even harder, but who´s products have not been on the market at the rigth time and right place, do not write books about their unsuccess. Think about it! There are many examples that show this fact. Just search for the figures, that show how many companys have to close in the first 2 years after they have been founded! All the companys Musk founded after paypal would no longer be there, if he wouldn´t had so much money in stock, and such a well known name and reputation! Don´t get me wrong. I do not hate Musk! I have a lot of respect, cause he uses a lot of his private money to create something new, and to push the industrie further. Not many, if not almost nobody of the rich people is doing this in the way Musk is doing it! But he does it with his pirvat money! it´s his hobby! And i am sure he will keep doing it till he looses all of it! He for sure is a pioneer! But he was very lucky in his life! And all the other companys like Tesla and Space-X are realy a pain in the ass if You see it from a capitalisitc perspectiv. He has to put his own money into them, just to keep them alive. And he now has a reputation and big name that is keeping people investing in these companys, although they do not make any real profit. So don´t think You can be as these people, who just had luck or do have a big name or lot of money in stock! Don´t buy their books about how to be successfull! Sure, eductaion helps You to get a good life! But You will never be like Elon Musk, only because You study and work hard! That is just a myth!

  34. Why 99% of people fail? What is success? Because people don't see a good enough reason to move their ass for something that will give them maximum money for 100 years(And along the way, they will give them nervous stress and charge them life years). Lucky there are idiots like Elon Musk who don't see it and thinks that being famous and have money means success. Otherwise there weren't so many nice inventions to use like electric cars , thank you Elon Musk for shortening your life for us and spending so much time, you have so much headache and all for us? So it seems to me that 99 percent do well and you are 1% of those who do not.

  35. We're afraid of risk because we don't want to lose what we have, he said. Could I be braver, if I had nothing? Am I just afraid of failure itself? I should crush fear inside of me first. 👊
