Danville Fire Department planning to increase education efforts after record number of calls

MEANWHILE .. NEW NUMBERS FROM THE DANVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT SHOW AUGUST WAS A RECORD-BREAKING MONTH FOR THE DEPARTMENT. FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO MORE CALLS THAN THEY EVER HAVE IN A SINGLE MONTH IN THE HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT IT’S THE SECOND MONTH IN A ROW THE RECORD WAS BROKEN. WSLS 10’S COLTER ANSTAETT EXPLAINS WHAT’S BEHIND THE NUMBERS. FOR THE SECOND MONTH IN A ROW LAST MONTH, THE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO A RECORD NUMBER OF CALLS. THEY RESPONDED TO 747 TOTAL CALLS. THAT’S FIRES, OBVIOUSLY, BUT IT ALSO INCLUDES THINGS LIKE EMS CALLS AND CAR ACCIDENTS. THE ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF TOLD ME THIS AFTERNOON THAT ONE OF THE BIG REASONS THEY BELIEVE THE NUMBERS WERE SO HIGH LAST MONTH AND THEN ALSO BACK IN JULY IS BECAUSE OF THE HOT AND HUMID WEATHER. NATURALLY, WHEN IT’S HOT AND HUMID OUTSIDE YOU’RE GOING TO TEND TO HAVE MORE EMS CALLS AS PEOPLE GET OVERHEATED, PEOPLE GET HEAT EXHAUSTION. NOW THAT THE SEASONS ARE STARTING TO CHANGE AND THE WEATHER IS STARTING TO BECOME COOLER, THE DEPARTMENT EXPECTS THE NUMBERS TO GO DOWN SLIGHTLY THOUGH THEY DO EMPHASIZE THAT THE NUMBERS HAVE BEEN TRENDING UP THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. THEY SAY THAT REALLY IS NOT JUST A TREND HERE IN DANVILLE, BUT THAT IS A TREND NATIONWIDE. STEVE DISHMAN/ASST. FIRE CHIEF: “WE ARE RESPONDING MORE AND MORE TO A VARIETY OF CALLS…DURING THAT TIME WAS AN EXCEPTIONALLY HOT, HUMID PERIOD. IT’S NOT A SURPRISE. TONIGHT ON WSLS 10 AT 6, I’LL TELL YOU WHAT THE DEPARTMENT PLANS TO DO TO COMBAT THE TREND OF INCREASING CALLS. FOR NOW THOUGH, IN DANVILLE, COLTER ANSTAETT, WSLS 10.
