Critical entertainment: beyond educational games (teaser)


Mario Lapin: Hi there! Educational games and
‘gamification’ have been preached as ‘holy grails’ when it comes to foster
student’s engagement, especially in subjects which
are otherwise considered uninteresting or hard to approach.
Nonetheless, why is it still rare to find improvements in learning metrics
among current game-based learning experiences? I’ve been dedicated to learning games
for the last 12 years, leading a team relentlessly working to figure out
what works, what doesn’t, and why. And believe me: enabling effective learning with games is not a
‘one-size-fits-all’ approach which can be easily scaled up and reproduced. I wish to share our experiences at SXSW EDU 2018 in a talk which will critically analyze
implementation scenarios for educational games, and propose a
new framework to understand how playfulness can lead to effective
learning augmentation. See you there!
