>>GROWING UP, I DID PRETTY
WELL. I GOT GOOD GRADES. BUT WHEN I WAS GOING TO COLLEGE,
I HAD THIS ROLE MODEL, AND WHO I
COULD RELATE TO. SO I WANT TO BE THERE SO I CAN
HELP THE STUDENTS TO GET TO
WHERE THEY NEED TO BE.>>WHAT MADE ME WANT TO SERVE
WAS CO-CHAIR, SERVING IN THE
BRONX, I CAN RELATE MORE TO THE
STUDENTS. THEY WERE DOING A RECRUITING
THERE. I CHECKED IT OUT. AND I LIKED THE FACT THAT
THEY’RE THERE FROM THE TIME THAT
THE KIDS COME IN AND THE TIME
THEY LEAVE. TEACHERS HAVE 30 KIDS, AND
THERE’S ONLY ONE OF THEM BUT
WHEN YOU’RE IN THERE, THEY HAVE
THEIR HEADS DOWN. IT’S CHALLENGING. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, IT’S
REWARDING.>>ONE OF MY FAVORITE STUDENTS
IS GIDEON. HE CAME FROM AFRICA. AND HE HAS A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH
ENGLISH. HE OFTEN SHUTS DOWN. SO I’VE BEEN WORKING WITH GIDEON
SINCE DAY ONE. GIDEON IS THE TYPE OF KID WHO
HAS A LOT OF ENTHUSIASM AND HE
BRINGS JOY TO THE WHOLE TEAM. HE COMES TO SCHOOL BEFORE US. GIDEON IS HERE IN FRONT OF THE
SCHOOL WAITING FOR ME AND WILL
SIT OUTSIDE AND DO THE HOMEWORK. I’M MORE LIKE A ROLE MODEL. SOMEONE HE CAN TALK TO. SOMEONE HE CAN TALK TO. AND THAT CONFIDENCE CARRIES ON
INTO YOUR RELATIONSHIPS AND
EVERYTHING YOU DO IN YOUR LIFE. I FEEL LIKE IF I WEREN’T THERE,
GIDEON WOULD STILL BE IN THE
BACK OF THE CLASS, WITH HIS HEAD
DOWN AND NOT GETTING THE ATTENTION HE DESERVES. THE RED JACKET IS POWERFUL. AND I REALIZED IT. PEOPLE RESPECT YOU. PEOPLE KNOW WHO YOU ARE. PEOPLE KNOW WHAT YOU DO. WHEN THEY SEE SOMEONE WHO HAVE
GONE OUT AND SEEN THE WORLD,
THEY KNOW SOMEONE FROM THE SOUTH
BRONX HAS A FAIR CHANCE. WHEN THEY SEE SOMEONE WHO HAVE
GONE OUT AND SEEN THE WORLD,
THEY KNOW SOMEONE FROM THE SOUTH
BRONX HAS A FAIR CHANCE.>>WHAT AN ARMY OF FABULOUS
WORK. EDUCATION IN HIGH-POVERTY
COMMUNITIES TOO OFTEN ENDS WITH
A SHOCKINGLY HIGH DROPOUT RATE. FOR 25 YEARS, MENTORS LIKE BRIAN
FLORES, ARE PARTNERING TO KEEP
