2018 CHIEF MINISTER’S AWARDS WINNER – Department of Education

Launched 2017-18 Christmas period, Mutitjulu Community – Working Together is a holiday program for young people in the Mutitjulu community. The program included traditional owners and families as well
as key stakeholders; Mutitjulu school, Mutitjulu Community Aboriginal
Corporation, Ngaanyatjarra Pitjatjara Yankunytjatjara women’s council,
NT police, Mutitjulu Pool, Anangu Jobs, Australian regional and
remote community services, and the Mutitjulu foundation. The project aimed
to keep young people busy and fed during the holiday period, traditionally a time
when significant vandalism occurred in the community, often with extensive
damage to Mutitjulu school. The first program was a success with young people engaged throughout the holidays and no vandalism to the school at all. One of
few communities not to suffer damage, according to the local police constable.
